City don’t just go out and pay whatever the seller wants there are examples of them walking away from deal because the seller had an unreasonable asking price
I know. It’s amazing how well they have done Considering their spending over the years.
I think city walking away saved them from Harry maguire too.

We're not at the point where we need a "Rice" yet. Most of the players that make up Woolwich's first XI were bought young and have evolved. Once they did, Rice was the missing piece and they went after him. But only after having finished 2nd the year before. I doubt they would have spunked £100m for him a year earlier.

We're following a similar model. And we still spent £65m for a striker, so it's not like we're going exclusively the young and cheap route and waiting for them to evolve. But it may take another year or two before we're in the same position Woolwich was at the end of the 22/23 season.
Exactly, the last time we were in that position was 2017 & 18 and well…

must be some dodgyness going on too, alvarez deal for them was too good to be true. 16m or something silly? surely brown envelopes being passed about behind the scenes
I don’t know as I don’t watch football that much anymore so not sure if he was expected to do really well & was highly rated. Or just very good scouting from city as well as a bit of luck. I’d never heard of him but that’s like most players these days.

How bizarre we are.

Non-stop transfer tittle tattle and frustration at missing out on Neto from some. Many saying Gallagher would be a decent signing and that was before the Skipp news/then sale broke.

We sign a youngster from a relegated team, albeit one who looks like he has potential, and many are seemingly content

We are 1/2 players of requisite qiuality short of being competitive.

Pundits who know nothing and those who think optimism is enough are living in the land of La La.

As clear as the days are shortening.

16m for a kid out of the Argentine league isn't that silly.

He was a punt that worked out is ad deep as that goes.
yea maybe. 22 though, looked good as soon as they played him. if they was the only ones onto him for that price its a bit strange. 14m apparently, thats literally spunk money in football. good goal record from big side like river plate.

if it was all kosher then fair play. but the 115 tells me they dont fly straight so things like this should be looked at too lol.

does feel like that. 2 genuine quality wide players that suit this system would make a huge difference. but we wont get that. we can only hope that moore will evolve into one, but thats a coupe years away and by then romero will be gone and well be short at the back then.

would still take a punt on cheisa, can play both sides and offers quality and dog work in the press.

Yeah, we missed an opportunity there, but our finances weren't what they are today, either. Should have sold an Eriksen or Dele or Dier to finance a refresh, but we were still too scared to lose star players to replace them with new up-and-coming talent. And given our horrible scouting at the time, it might have been money pissed away, anyway.

I reckon it remains to be seen how good he really is, or whether he just benefitted from the City set up.

£70m+ is the crazy fee here.

Alvarez was well known, lot of clubs were looking at him. Mentioned on this board a few times as well. City just got in there and did the deal, for what was a bargain fee.

If Romero is gone, we'll probably have £80-90m to replace him. Which is fine. We shouldn't be afraid to sell star players and replace them with new ones, and our scouting and recruitment is good enough to do that. It keeps things fresh and is a healthy approach. Dortmund have been doing it for ages and, unlike them, we can hold on to players a bit longer, so it won't be chop and change every season.
