None of those players listed can be described as "punts". What exactly is your definition of the word "punt"? just because the player is at a lesser team and he so happens to be on a lower wage it's a punt?

You can add Ndombele and Richarlison to that list as well.
Around 120m spent on both with Ndombele being on 200k p/w.
These are not "punts". These are attempts at signing proven players of a certain quality that for one reason or another didn't work (and I really wanted us to sign both).

Your logic is essentially that unless we strong-arm a player from Real Madrid on extreme wages then every player is a "punt".

I’m saying the best players attract the biggest wage offers.
The market is competing for the best players and the players who more teams are sure about will get more competition for their signature and better wage offers.
As soon as more clubs are sure about a player, under Levy that’s when we step out and leave others to it.
We prefer to try and find top players without paying top wages.
As Spurs fans we know that the players like Nico Williams, Osimhen, Kvaratshkelia etc won’t be coming to Spurs and they won’t be coming even when we have champions league football and a squad that’s close to winning. We saw that when we were at that stage.
And we all know why.

EVERY player is a punt then.
Di Maria > Man U..... He was was one of the highest performing players in the world at the time... Was prized from a rich club and being Utd. they payed him mega-wages too....... Yet he was still a bust.
Conversely; you had the temerity to argue that Darwin Nunez was a "ready made star" a month or two ago..... Yet he came from a lesser league, from a smaller team, is paid less than Romero (eg) and yet commonly gets likened to Andy Carrol.
You're nothing if not inconsistent.

IMO every signing has a degrees of gamble/punt to it.
Either the gamble is weighted against the financial risk of wages and transfer fee or it’s weighted against the quality of player not being as good.
Our model under Levy leans towards the latter.

To me you can’t call them punts though, they were players who had a lot of minutes in the prem, Saha had a number of goals at Fulham and United… at the time was I impressed? Maybe not so much but would I say he was a punt? No. Same with Nelson, league experience and was an important player for Blackburn.
Defoe, Kanoute, Kranjcar, Crouch… I wouldn’t refer to them as points tbh, not always fantastic scouting, and we know we don’t buy big players for big money… but I feel like basically any player could be argued as a punt if you change the context enough?
