Transfers The Winter Transfer Thread - 25/26

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I don't want to defend ENIC but the transfer market is fucking crazy. £40-£50m now for an absolutley average player is unreal.

Strand-Larsen would have been a £12-£15m pound player not that long ago.

These increases can't be sustainable surely?

This is why I would rather spend £100m+ on a top drawer player who will move the needle.
Have to take a moment to commend you for correct usage of this phrase, as opposed to the legions of internet folk who seem to believe that "top draw" is a thing...

:ange-clap:

That's where you and I disagree.

To attract a player like that you have to show the player that you have the ambition to win the big trophies and have other similar targets lined up. And you have to pay that player top wages.

If you then get gazumped by a rival, so be it. But at least you are showing the ambition to move the needle.

I don't buy that Spurs isn't big enough to attract players. What we need is a mentality shift and the ambition to go for the big trophies.

Our board keeps talking about the ambition but then failing to match the words with actions, and that's what makes the fan base angry.

If the boards real ambition is just to potter along and try and make the top 4 every season then they need to lower the expectations with the fan base instead of promising the moon, and most importantly lower the ticket prices accordingly.

I don't disagree that finding prospects is a good route for a club like ours, but it should be done in conjunction with buying top players, not as an alternative.

Fair enough.

I do think we need to be in a far better position before we are likely to attract any such players, even if we are able to spend such sums.

Mateta makes no sense. Dom is fit now, so will play most games. Richarlison is still on the books despite his injury,

It makes far more sense for us to sign a versatile wide attacker / forward like a Son, rather than a no 9 lump up top.

I assume if we keep Frank there is going to be a lot of get the ball forward quick play even with Heitinger now as coach so it might be seen by Frank as the priority but yeh from a pure squad perspective left wing looks by far the most bare position.

Makes sense. If Muani is off then we definitely need another striker - particularly with Richy crocked. Not sure there's better than Mateta available in Jan?
We already have better or par in Dane Scarlett. If you gave him 90 mins in Palace's team every week, he would have ten goals. Honestly, if you feel the need to bring in Mateta then just fucking sell Scarlett.

I could be wrong but I think the incompatibility factor of pursuing those top, top £70-100m + players is the wages they would demand which would upset the apple cart and have other players at the club subsequently demanding higher wages which ends up being unaffordable.
No, I think you are correct. I think that our wage structure has always prevented top quality players wanting to join the club, which puts it at odds with owners talking about winning the league as their ultimate goal. Can you really see a team winning the league where their players are all paid less than the other clubs they are competing alongside? It's the sort of 'once in a blue moon' event, like Leicester winning the league, where a lot has to go right, all at once.

We are a rich club with lots of revenue streams, so it's time to get real with what it costs to be successful. Money makes money, so if the owners did buy top quality players, that in itself would be a money-amking investment, by the increase of revenues from sales, cup run proceeds, sponsorship increases, advertising increases and other deals. You need to spend money to make money, but I suspect given how badly we have spent money in the past (the N'Dombele's of this world), there is a risk aversion to breaking the mould.

I could live with it if the club came out and said that their ambition is to get top 4/5 every season and win the odd cup, and we have done that in the past 7-8 years, which should then mean setting higher goals, investing more and pushing on. We went in full reverse. Now we need to aim, once again, to build a side capable of top 4/5 on a regular basis, which means a better manager and better players than we have. The transfer window clock is ticking, but who is confident that we will end up with anything other than last-minute desperation buys? Please no Mateta or Harvey Elliott. It's just same old, same old.

That's when you know the guy you are arguing with literally has nothing.

Palace and West Ham are bringing in attacking reinforcements. Open your eyes and take your fingers out of your ears.

You don't even acknowledge the problem so you sure as shit won't begin to understand the solutions.

Would you have taken anyone West Ham or Palace brought in?

Is your solution to just buy anyone?

Give me an example that you believe is gettable that we should be signing?

I'm neither for or against the club possibly signing Mateta but wasn't Solanke fit before he got injured, and is Richarlison due to be back anytime soon?

I think we need another striker to just give ourselves a buffer to injuries.

Were relegation not an issue, I would agree with you and 2 or 3 others who hold similar views

But the club have allowed this situation to develop and need to ensure a way out is found.
