He doesn't need to play an entire game as an 8 to assist the team building up with the ball
But then with the ball there's too big a gap between him and palinha.
You need a double pivot in the middle and either an attacker or defending midfielder. You okay 1 DM, 1 CM and 1 AM and we're going to get absolutely bullied in the middle of the park. It doesn't work like that.

No point melting we knew with that midfield that would happen eventually that's why we bought Simon's.

Bournemouth had that squads number they pressed the midfield cause they know we had no one to beat the press in any fashion. And they stuck big horrible bastards who kicked lumps out of Kudus and Richie to stop the longball.

Bournemouth pressed like men possessed hence why they gassed after 70 mins and ended up clinging on when they should have been 4-0 up.

Won't play teams like that every week on such good form and so many players won't drop stinkers.

Today just showed the limitations of the players we already knew where there. Thankfully Franks now seen them and can try fix and replace what he can't fix
You're absolving Frank of any blame here.

This was more on his tactics and fearing Bournemouth too much, which invited pressure on us. Palinha shouldn't have started in hindsight, and changes should've been in the first half, never mind 60 mins. It's very evident we were being overrun, targeting or right side.

We got into the game more when we had more balance in the side to attack, not because Bournemouth tired.

You don't need it for every attack, if he's playing as a 10 and we are struggling to create then he can drop back in build up

Teams don't setup as rigid as you suggest in 6/8/10, you don't play football on a a chess board...players move around the pitch interchanging positions, what I am suggesting is if we are struggling to get the ball forward then he can drop back to help his team mates in ball progression

Watch any other team who struggle with build up, players like Odegaard, Palmer etc...often drop back and help circulate the ball to get their teams up the pitch.

Dude, biggest issue is without the ball. We'll get fucking played through. If he could play the 8, he'd have been played there by now. There's obviously a reason he hasn't.

You have to be able to dictate a game to play deeper as well, from what I've seen of Simons, I don't think he has that. Great dribbler, absolutely, but you're very much underestimating the ability to play multiple positions. He'll be the opposite issue of Palinha.

I think everyone needs to remember he’s got a genuine rebuilding job on his hands. We were 17th last season and the squad is still in state of flux, we’re trending in a better direction but I think he needs at least a season and two summer windows to sort it out.

If we’re even in the discussion or around the UCL spots this season I think that’s an admirable improvement.

? I haven't said anything about him playing as an 8? I said in matches like these he should be able to drop back and dictate and assist in ball progression when we have the ball.

That midfield had just overrun man city's. I thought changes should have been at HT I must admit but at the end of the day we needed someone who could beat that press in midfield and didn't matter who he started we didn't really have someone who could.

When Simon's is in the side shouldn't be as much of an issue you would hope

We'd have got absolutely destroyed playing him and Palinha in the same team today. That's my point. It's going to be one or the other most of the time.

Simons Palhinha and Bentancur works far better than Sarr Palhinha and Bentancur, that's my point, there's a much better balance as you have a ball progressor and a creator.
