This is exactly the problem and the same one we had with Ange, Nuno, Mourinho and to an extent Conte. Managers have their own idea of football and you have to make sure it matches with the club ethos before you hire them.
Frank knows how to play Frankball. Ange knows how to play Angeball. Asking them to change is just admitting they are the wrong man for the job. If you want a manager to deviate from their principles then it’s better just to sack them, they will never be able to effectively implement something they don’t believe in. We saw Nuno try to implement the Tottenham way and it was diabolical, he didn’t know what to do.
We saw the opposite with Ange at Forest, he simply refused to change. Even though he just won a trophy by sitting deep and hoofing the ball away, at the request of his players, when he went to Forest he went straight back to suicide-ball even though the squad he had was perfect for that caveman football. The result was a humiliating run of results and a record-breakingly fast sacking.
This failure to ensure managers match the football identity of the club is the reason Levy had to sack so many of them. When he found one that DID match, like Jol, Redknapp and Poch, it worked. It’s not fucking rocket science. Tottenham should be playing bold but smart football. Not kamikaze Ardiles/Ange stuff or turgid Frank/Nuno.
