The MOTD highlights?

Yeah they weren't at all reflective of the game

Wasn't just the highlights.
We only won because Casamiero and Fernandes were out of position.
That's according to the pundits after the game.
They were also interviewing Amorim whilst talking about all their chances, whilst the actual stats were coming up on screen.
You know, the stats that show we had more off, more on, and a higher Xg than them?
And the fact that their chances came in 2's and 3's. IE, had any one of those gone in, they couldn't have scored the others as the game stopped. So from their 6 on target, they could have have actually only scored 2 or 3 at best.
All of ours were individual chances. So from our 7 on target (more than 6) we could have scored all 7.

How they twist it is pathetic sometimes.

If people are not sports scientists but still jump to wild assumptions and base their own (usually pretty aggravated) opinions on it and even present those opinions as facts… that is funny and absurd.

Good.
So given that you are not sport scientist, I assume you never say anything about injuries going forward? Not about what causes them but then also not about what does not cause them.

And given that you have not been EPL level manager nor player then you do not comment on any of the decisions, actions or reactions you see on the pitch :) ? Because all of that is your own (usually pretty aggrevated) opinion ?

Good.
Forum quality will undoubtedly improve from that!

Fuck knows why as well - surely they've noticed that piling in on Utd gets them quite a lot of viewers and engagement

I’d say I am one of the more optimistic posters on this board but really our quality of play is inexcusable and that is down to Ange.

Scrapping to a 1-0 home win against a relegation threatened United is not going to endear the fans who see clear as day that this squad is very poorly coached and playing in a system which is completely and utterly ineffective.
I agree, the feeling after yesterday's result was mainly utter relief rather than joy. Apart from a couple of flashes of exciting front play, there wasn't much to get you out of your seat.
Atmosphere was as flat as a pancake (might have to do with the demos), apart from when Spence had the ball (and that was tempered when you realized that he was going to pass to Sonny).
The MOTD commentator referred to the game as the match of the underachievers - although annoying, he wasn't wrong.

Small steps to recover confidence

If we are going to salvage anything via the EL we need to get used to winning again, doesn't matter how.

It was a much better performance than some we've seen lately. But maybe that's clouded by the opposition. We see Man United and we're programmed to think that's a good win.
We've played them 5 times since Ange arrived and won 4 and drew the other.
Even Mason managed to snatch a draw from 2-0 down, so we've won 4 and drawn 2 of our last 6. Their last win came in October 2022.
That was just as the fairly solid start that season under Conte wobbled a bit.

We can't really feel like it's a big scalp anymore.

It’s like thinking Villa are a top team by beating us , couldn’t beat 10 man Ipswich. We were better but I still thought they were going to get a draw. Wide open at right back yet again.

It felt like that watching it on the box. Like when you get to the end of a movie and think "was that it?"

Got a long way to go to look like we're halfway capable of challenging for a top four slot.

Yeah, but the fanbois can use them being great by beating us as ammo as we beat them 4-1 without injuries.
When, in reality, they went into that game having drawn 2-2 with Ipswich, 0-0 Man United, beat Fulham and 1-1 with Bournemouth. So they were in pretty poor form, which continued after our game when they lost to Liverpool, drew with Palace and got spanked by Chelsea.
Funny side, bit like us, seem to be able to roll a shit in glitter from time to time to make it sparkle, but there's no real polish there.
Their league wins this season are against WHU, LCFC, early season Everton, Wolves, Fulham, Brentford (who don't win away), Southampton, a broken City, LCFC again, Everton in Moyes' first game.
So much like us, they have won games they mostly should have won, lost the game they should have lost, and varies a bit in the middle sometimes.
Unlike us, they only ever win by 1 goal and occasionally 2. Never 3 or more.

So yeah, beating them 4-1 was never a "wow" moment.

Funny old game, wasn't it?

I thought overall we were the better team. But we definitely had periods where United were putting pressure on and we looked a little rag tag defending it.
United had, what seemed like a lot of really good chances to score, yet we had a higher shot count, shots on target count and Xg. I just think out higher Xg chances were based on shots from inside the crowded box that went straight at Onana which made them look a little less like a certain goal chance.

Son seemed to have more energy than usual. There was a willingness to run.
But my word did he look toothless. All a defender has to do these days is stand him up. He doesn't seem to know whether to pass or take the man on, so just sort of stops.
And did the goal come from a Son shot or was it meant to be a pass drilled at Bergvall?

I thought Tel was very busy, especially in the 2nd half. PL website says he had 7 of our 22 shots, but it felt like more to me.

Pretty much how I saw it too mate -

We weren't great and 2nd half we really struggled to keep hold of the ball but we deserved the win

The funny thing about that game was that after it I thought - if we had Amorim and the majority of our players fit, his system could really work here. At Utd he basically needs an entire rebuild of his squad... here we've got 4 CB's, 4 wingbacks and enough in the midfield to make it work, plus we'd "lose" our ineffectual inside forwards/wingers.
absolutely

The only time I thought they score was when garnacho skied that easy chance first half. Apart from that I thought we were comfortable. We had some good periods of pressure where if Solanke or Richy were at centre forward we’d have run out easy winners. Ipswich were a better side.

.....And will be a tougher game this weekend.

United had no MF to speak of and still we didn't establish sustained control and coughed up possession way too much.

United had 3 CBs and for as many blocks as they made, they still left gaps for us to exploit.
