I have been defending Johnson a lot, and ulike you I think he is a decent player, but I will agree with one part of your post. He doesn't offer enough out of posession, and need to be taking much more responsabilty defensive wise.
Like you illustrated, jogging around after losing, or still being close to, the ball. He needs to have this adressed and fixed

Agree. Those Man City youngsters are through many years well trained to do exactly what they did yesterday. Play the ball quick, keep possession, move it from side to side looking for the right opportunity. They stood no chance to our pressing in the first 20 minutes. And in the end, we had a some clear goal scoring opportunities.
We played for 40 minutes with Davies and Dragusin. Started 18 old Gray on rb. Still, even with all the possession, they managed just 3? shots on target. Werner is not our first choice either. And neither is the recently long term injured Richarlison.

He was willing to risk losing to experiment, I reckon.
That team clearly has the drive to win everything , so I genuinely think it was to show faith in the youngsters and test them. Not throwing on Big Greta Thunberg to rescue things could've been a confidence boost to the rest of them.
One thing about Gray is when he takes a throw in…..he always looks for the complicated throw, to a player who is being marked instead of a safe throw backwards guaranteed to get to a Spurs player.
