Transfer window shutting 3 weeks before rest of Europe

Closing the window before the season starts is logical, what the leagues need to do is agree on a simultaneous closure across Europe. Either that or make a rule where there can be no business in OR out once a window is closed. It's not right that foreign teams can continue to unsettle players after our window has closed.

The argument was back and forth ...

Closing a window before the season starts means that every squad is confirmed and all teams start on an equal basis, in theory that makes perfect sense .... indeed it has worked well for the EPL with all clubs getting their transfers done and squads registered.

Conversely why should Europe be made to close it's window early just because the EPL starts a week before Germany and Spain, and two weeks before Italy ...

The issue this raises is with European clubs being able to 'buy' players after the EPL window closes, so why is that an issue, can't the EPL just say no?

Poch is saying he doesn't know if Eriksen is staying or going, but the truth is he probably knows what it will take, there will be a number that the transfer team will have agreed is acceptable for us to sell Eriksen / Danny / Toby / Victor and probably a few more ... feck if PSG offered 500m for Kane should we take it? how about 700m or 1,000m there will always be a number for any player. Of course what Poch doesn't know is if that number will be triggered by a European club, that's his and every EPL manager's problem how can they plan if one, two, three players might suddenly vanish. In the end Spurs can always just say no but that could be a very poor business decision.

The far bigger problem was highlighted in the Dybala negotiation. Whilst every effort might have been made to get the deal done, for Juve they always knew that should the Spurs deal fail they still had three weeks to sell Dybala, that's a huge problem for Spurs. It means that clubs like PSG can wave 85/90/100m at Dybala in early August keeping Juve from selling to the EPL, but the minute the EPL window shuts they can drop the offer to the same 65m or less that Spurs were offering ... that huge advantage is what Poch is rightly pissed about, gives the European clubs two goes in the same window the pre EPL close, and the post EPL close.

The solution is for all the European leagues to close the transfer window a week before the season starts, and for all Leagues to start on the same weekend ... but since when has common sense mattered ...

I like it. Going back to having the window open after the season starts would be horrible. Some sitiuations may occur where it's disadvantages, but some where it advantageous. Overall it's a positive I think.

Tbf it was us that decide to close early.

Should have just kept it at en august
I have to disagree. We were screwed around time and again by losing players to PL rivals after the season started to the point of almost accepting that we write off August and start proper in Sept. Players going on strike and handing in a transfer request during pre-season is one thing but while you have important matches to play it completely disrupts the team.
Yes we can always lose a player internationally but we have a choice whether to sell or not.
And whilst I can see where you are coming from with losing out on a player and the selling club get a second bite of the cherry to sell cheaper in Europe. I don't actually think it will be that much of an issue as the selling club want to get the most money they can. You could argue that it could actually work in our favour forcing them to sell to us and even reduce their price to guarantee the riches of a PL team in case they don't get any better offer later.

Think this deserves own thread.

Said it at the time. Its stupid to close our window early. All it has done is give an advantage to our european rivals who can now compete for players without English money getting in the way.

Its like playing cards. The fist person to play is at a disadvantage. The last has an advantage of seeing what the other players have.

We have effectively cut our nose off to spite our face. Cleared the trouble of having transfers ruin start of the season. But lost a key player (Dybala) to a european rival (PSG) having more time to negotiate.

Find it bizarre that someone as smart as Levy voted for this. And Im not suprised Poch is asking for it to end

Don't think it's much of an issue tbh - the money in the english game means there's little risk of players being poached so you don't have to worry about that and it gives you a bit more time to clear out the deadwood

once the window closes it should be closed in or out, so window closed in EPL on Thursday so no player can come or go in EPL (maybe that should include free agents)
all clubs have had a reasonable time to buy/sell

Pochettino was also pissed about the window shutting during the season...now he's done a 180...and another thing is that we were working on the Dybala deal for three weeks which Juve pulled out off, why would they do that just to get less money from PSG...

We tried to dictate / go it alone. After the European clubs said they wouldn't start earlier (heat in Spain etc) we really should have looked at starting our season later and hopefully meeting in the middle. Closing the window before the season starts is a great idea but we should have worked with the other countries to do this effectively.

Selling EPL players is only part of the problem, no EPL club can be forced to sell ... the bigger issue is European clubs buying players at very reduced prices once the EPL clubs are no longer allowed to compete ... be interesting to see if an cut-price transfers now happen ....

Its not about being poached its about having to pay higher prices for targets. The seller knows if you cant get a deal with an English club you can always sell continental.

I disagree.

There should have been some sort of agreement, whether changing the start of leagues to all match or all to agree on the window close date or not at all. In the current situation it only takes a big balls bid from say Madrid in the next couple of weeks for one of your best players to fuck things up for the rest of the season.

We didn’t really try, we told them they should shut when we do and when they said no shut ours then anyway... Didn't even try to negotiate... I. E we start ours a week or so later
