Darren Caskey always stays in my mind.
Same age group as me, he was the England under 18 captain who won the UEFA tournament for their age group.
He just never amounted to much in the professional game.
Amazing how many 18-21 year olds who look great never really kick on.
(Chris Day played in that England team as well -spurs youth player he ended up at Stevenage FC, a Stevenage lad and also a big Spurs fan)
That made his ears burnHe got an ice pick
Not Spurs.....but
Freddy Adu was being touted as (another) "new Pele" at the age of 14!!
Bloody ridiculous.
"From before the time of his signing with D.C. United at the age of 14, Adu was spoken of and treated as the future of United States soccer;[2] even being referred to as "the next Pelé".[3] However, he failed to live up to the expectations and, after leaving D.C. United in 2006, he became a journeyman,[4] playing for fourteen teams in eight countries: the United States, Portugal, Monaco, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Serbia, and Finland. "
Don't forget the US league was proper shit then

Luongo has been a great player for Rangers. Where I live, every fucker is either Rangers or Chelsea so easy to keep tabs.Saw mention of Massimo Luongo in the youth thread that he's joined Sheffield Wednesday from QPR so started doing the usual Wikipedia search to see how his career has gone

- PFA Team of the Year: 2014–15 League One
- AFC Asian Cup Most Valuable Player: 2015
- AFC Asian Cup Team of the Tournament: 2015
So thought I'd create this thread about not just former players but also players we were linked with in the past. Who remembers this gem?
Emmanuel Mbola - Wikipedia

Although linked in February 2010 with a move to English club Tottenham Hotspur[3] and having been on trial at Woolwich in autumn 2010 he was involved in an ongoing transfer saga over his move to Pyunik Yerevan and a subsequent move to a Congolese club, TP Mazembe.
This was resolved in September 2010 when FIFA ruled that the Armenian club had been wrong in arranging for Mbola to sign a professional contract when he was underage, which resulted in FIFA canceling the International Transfer Certificate (ITC) held by the Armenian club. This ruling meant that Mbola could officially join TP Mazembe.
Was in my daughter's class at primary school, in Worcester Avenue.Saw Jonathan Obika joined St. Mirren.
True, let's do it another way then. Guess the player!

He was spoken about in almost revered terms as the great white hope in English football when he started to get some attention.John Bostock
Thought he was the next big thing
