Have exactly similar feeling. He made simple things simple, and it was already big upgrade in terms of ball control and retention.

I think Johnson got a reprieve because Solanke and Richy weren't fit to start but that is hopefully not the case next week.
 
Excellent debut imo. A few ropey moments to be expected for someone who's just arrived but I had zero worries about him being on the pitch. Credit to Lange and co for getting him.

I don’t mean that as a major dig at Son, Werner or Johnson but even when looked at positively they are high risk players who try tricks and flicks because they want to force the issue and lose the ball a lot. We can’t have 2 wingers in the team on both sides who constantly lose the ball. Its to much work for our team defending.

Odobert simply being good at controlling the ball, pressing the defender and linking with players near him gives our attack much better balance and if he can consistently beat the defender then it could really make our attack better.

Your first paragraph is what really stood out for me with Odobert. He recycled when necessary, but took his man on, or attacked space, when we managed to overload the left. Looks like he has some intelligence to go with the dribbling skills.

He did fade somewhat as the game wore on, but that's to be expected with the intensity we play at.

That would have been a promising debut for a more senior player, let alone a 19 year old

I actually thought some of the interchange play between Kulusevski and Johnson in the first half was very neat and tidy, I definitely think Kulusevski's future lies in the centre of the pitch, he was almost adopting a mezzala role in there today and naturally drifting out to the right in search of space in the channels, with Johnson providing some good overlapping runs into space. I do think this combination worked quite well today, he was bound to be nervous as well, first game for a new club in a mammoth stadium with a capacity (or as close to as) crowd, he was dispossessed a bit easily a couple of times but I think he just needs to settle down and things will come more naturally. Once Udogie starts clocking that he's beat his man and making those inquisitive runs in the channel between LW and CM I think we're gonna get some goals from absolutely nowhere this season.

What struck me immediately was how good his touch is. Killed the ball instantly regardless of how it arrived.

You could see Maddison really trusts him to take care of the ball and that's why they were linking so well.

Much needed change with so many bumbles in our front line that need 3 touches to control it.

Yeah, noticed that too. There were a couple of long diagonal balls played out to him that he took down beautifully.

I also noticed he's not afraid to drift infield to get involved, but without getting in the way, if you know what I mean?

I love intelligent Footballers, and he certainly looks like one.

Yeah can never have enough in the team.

The difference was also very obvious once we took them off and had Sarr, Johnson and Richarlison on the pitch. Just looks very 1 dimensional and basic.

To an extent, but I think that was as much Kulusevski running out of steam and coming off, as much as anything else. Deki had a very good game today I thought, and linked well with Johnson.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he kicks on from here. As you say, it looks like he and Maddison may just click really well on the left. I'm also hoping that happens with Solanke too, as I think Solanke is another intelligent player.

Early days yet, with sterner tests to come, but I like what I've seen so far.
 
Pretty impressive debut given his age and the step up from burnley to walking out in front of 60,000+!

Faded a bit in second half, but game was done and he was likely exhausted from the occasion! Love the confidence to take people on, couple of dodgy decisions, but he a kid and that will come with time

Not surprising really. Partly the occasion, but also the different system: Odobert averaged less than 5 take-ons per game last season, and I reckon he had at least 5 in the first 25 minutes vs Everton. Will need a little while to adjust his fitness and decision-making to suit the higher possession / field tilt.
