Player Xavi Simons

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

As I said in the summer transfer thread when news broke about our interest in him. After watching the highlight videos back then, I said, I don't see it.
Well, I still don't see it, and what I see is a light easy-to-push kid. To make it simple, he is like another Tel, or Odobert. Looks like Levy was in the "BTGO" store. Why do we keep buying these players? He was in the right level, right place in Germany.

I do recognize that his corners are special though. Very good to be honest.

But!!! I am patient, let's see how it goes in a few weeks.

[ALERT} PLEASE DON'T REPLY TO ARGUE HE IS USED ON THE WRONG POSITION. I AM GIVING AN OPINION OF INDIVIDUAL SKILLS REGARDLESS OF POSITION. I STILL DON'T SEE IT, NOT IN THE YOUTUBE VIDEOS, NOT IN SPURS GAMES.

I agree. Watching him at the Euros, I noticed the pace - but beyond that, there’s not a lot else. He can be dangerous on the counter, but since we’re not even playing that way, what’s the point?

And you’re right, there does seem to be an obsession in the recruitment team with that kind of player. Xavi, Odobert, Tel - all very similar in profile, and their end product is pretty much the same as well. None of them are proven in the Premier League either.

Feels like the strategy is just “keep trying until one of them clicks.” But together they’re close to £100m, which could’ve been used so much better. That’s a massive gamble for such little guaranteed output.

Sorry but this is really a silly take.

Simons is a well proven young player. Yes, not epl proven. And he's not 19, he's in his early 20s.

Tel was a teen starlett we decided to pay a king's ransom for. I'm still convinced it was a gentleman's agreement ala Kane's sale.

Odobert was a PL player who is young but had shown bright spots at a skill we lacked - dribbling.

Three very different players. The only commonality is that they're all under 23, which is such a silly comparator.

They said the same thing about Modric.

It's what we do these days, anyone joins us, needs to be peak Ronaldo, or they are shit, not good enough, or some other BS reason, why a player won't make it.

Then give them an endless stream of abuse online...

One of the reason why we are not allowed shiney things.
Wirtz has just rocked up at Liverpool from the same league in the same position and looks arguably the worse of the two. We realistically won't be seeing more than flashes from Xavi until after xmas, it's a big jump in intensity and game-to-game opposition quality, for any level of player, even £115m so-called "sure thing" signings. He's trying too hard to make an instant impact and needs to focus his efforts more, it's not unusual to see early doors with new signings.

He can get used to the physicality, his speed-of-thought and technique are more than ample to succeed in the PL, he just needs to work on sharpening his decision making and find an extra half a yard of pace through conditioning to give himself the tools to apply his game again. You don't get anything like the time on the ball or the gulf in quality between good vs poor teams in the PL that you get in Bundesliga, he hasn't been the immediate like-for-like replacement for Madds/Kulu we wanted but I have full faith we will be seeing the best of him by season end, similar to how Modric really came alive in the last 3 months of 08/09 under 'Arry.

*The only commonality that you see.

Lost possession 23(!) times and only won 5 out of 14 duels against Wolves

You sure you want this guy to play as a 10, he'd be eaten alive in that position in the Premier League.

Wasn't eaten alive against Brighton who are a better team. He just didn't have the fridge brothers pairing behind him against Brighton and the wingers either side of him actually wanted to play on that side. Play one of the fridges and Bergvall or Sarr with Xavi in the 10 and that midfield has some chance of being a midfield. JP and RB just vacate the entire area because they don't want the ball.

Not as physical as Wolves though and I don't see how losing duels is anything to do with other players, he's just weak and gets knocked off the ball too easily which is risky when you're playing in the middle of the pitch.

Why the fuck did we buy him then, to have a 10 who is too weak to play 10 shunted out wide where he’s obviously really ineffective?

It means you receive better passes, and you aren't outnumbered in the middle because nobody else in CM actually wants the ball.

Duels is a silly stat because it means any 1v1 situation. Most of the duels he lost were facing up a defender and trying to make something happen. That's not getting knocked off the ball. You just picked a stat and shoved it in there to try and support your point. The eye test didn't match your take at all.

He did misplace passes most of the game tho. Definitely not his best game for us so far.

Maybe you're right about duels but it's not a good look if your technically secure player is constantly losing the ball and if he's losing the ball in the middle of the pitch then it's a real problem.

Hate to be that guy but watch this specifically from 1 min in, he just loses the ball too much and it's not because of poor passes - you've just thrown that in because you don't currently like our midfield pairing, that's on him and his decision making if anything.

Its early yet so hope Simons comes good. But I watched both the Woolwich game and the Tottenham game at the weekend and Eze looks a far superior player than Xavi Simons.

Maybe he'll get up to speed and come good. But his attitude is questionable, he looks weak on the ball and he looks ineffective out wide. Our marquee signing wouldn't start for any of the big 3 and probably wouldn't even start for us if we'd Maddison and Kulusevski fit. I really hope he comes good. The cameo against Brighton was his best performance so far. He just looks waisted out wide and doesn't look strong enough to play in the 10 against a low block where teams are getting close to him. So right now its very hard to know how we can get the best out of him!
