I'd love to know that we had a DOF in that was looking two or three windows ahead regardless of manager.
that works if the club follows 1 style of football (like Swansea did for about 10 yrs) that way most of the players will fit any coach that the club brings in (with a DOF & club football believe the manager will coach the players he is given)

Got a Link for this?

Would love it to be true.

There are more of the same, but seems they are all citing Sport, which Clynelish Clynelish shared earlier

Have no idea about this guy, what kind of midfielder is he?

Working for a subtop club for top money seems equivalent to working for a top club for subtop money and with top pals Sacramento and Mourinho

(Or that's what I hope)

You fried my brain somewhat there.... Not outright, but it's sizzling a little.

Genuine question.

If Campos is so good, what’s he doing at Lille?

He's basically worked his way into the job. Started as a manager, not so successfully it appears, ended up as head scout at RMadrid, then became DOF at Monaco when they were taking off under Ribolovlev, helped build the side that won Ligue1, then the wheels came off at Monaco when FFP and Ribolovlev's divorce kicked in, and Gerard Lopez (owner of Lille and very shrewd businessman, IT and Sports - Football and F1- investor who also manage players and image rights) lured him over to Lille with a promise of cut of profits from sales I think.

I think a lot of these DOF/Sporting Director/Recruitment specialists often work better at medium/smaller clubs in France, Germany, Spain because at bigger clubs the recruitment process is slightly different, at big clubs it's less about unearthing cheap young gems that need polishing, or seeing the possibility of re-tooling a failed talent to make them viable (and valuable) again - it's more geared toward buying for the "now" and spending bigger sums and not adding inherent value.

I know that the bigger clubs do buy hot young prospects, but invariably it's to farm them or it's more speculative. At Lille/RBL/Rennes/Lyon/BMG/Seville etc etc level it's about unearthing raw materials and then adding inherent footballing and financial value.

This is where the Monchi's, Rangnick's, Mislintat's, Campos's etc etc (many in France and Germany particularly) tend to excel I think.

I’ve no doubt this is the group levy wanted us to act like. But then multiple champions league qualifications occurred, we got too big for our boots and forgot what grew the club and made it (relatively) successful in the first place. A return to it should be paramount.

Do we really need a DOF levy still controls the money so having another pen pusher won't change our fortunes, unless he is the man to target potential talent for us to snap up for a cheap price and huge sell on fee later.

I wouldn't say we forgot what got us there but, I was banging on to that effect for ages... We got too big too quickly in as much as we were ahead of schedule in terms of the stadium project vs the club's growth on the pitch. A cash injection to roll the dice on winning the league was never really viable given our financial focus over the duration of the build.

The specifics of a DOF can vary, but their job isn't to "control the money" or be a "pen pusher" (whatever the latter means in real terms).

Lots to read out there on the subject if you're genuinely interested.
