They didn't have to be top quality to compete (and save us a ton of money) with the likes of Sissoko, Aurier, Nkoudou, Njie, Moura, Foyth, Sanchez, Bergwijn did they ? Surely that's the point. Use the academy to fill the squad roles for free (money and HG) and use the money to buy better quality players, not ones that are barely better than the academy ones you have already for free.

And players like Onomah, KWP had their development ruined by Pochettino - they missed out on playing proper football for 3 years and a crucial stage. This kids might not ultimately be good enough for a top 4 team, but neither are the likes of Sissoko, Aurier, Moura etc, that's we aren't a top 4 team anymore.

To put it brief, we hindered the progress of average kids (who could have become good) in order to buy average (and vastly overpriced) players from the outside.

Well, now. That can't be right. Because Poch changed English football, you know.

"Football in England changed with that Southampton team of 2013-14, there is no other team that had as big an impact in changing the mindset,” Pochettino told Guillem Balague's Talking Football show on La Liga TV.

“We arrived at a club with a president like Nicola Cortese who gave us what we needed to create something unique in English football. Our ability to adapt to a completely different environment was incredible.

"We found a group of players who wanted to learn from the experiences we brought from Spanish football, and with the quality to play a different style of football to that which everyone in English football was used to. Young players started to appear, and people started to trust in young players, also in the English national team."

He is getting to Redknapp levels of horse shit.

It really does say it all about his managerial tenure when he has to come out with that level of drivel in order to elevate his status

Hahaha, I've said it before, I'll say it again. I'm bang up for doing a Leeds. Five years of European domination, silverware coming out of our yin-yang then a glorious implosion and visits to exotic places like Walsall and Rotherham. No plastics, no Jim White spaffing in his Y-fronts over the latest Carlos Kickaball, no exciting synergies.

Bring it on I say
At least the tickets might be cheaper!!

You don't understand the implications of financial doping both on the transfer market and the degree of competition within our league in particular?

No wonder you and those currently showering your posts with love happily mock the club for the "net spend trophy" "top 4 trophy" and "the right way trophy"....

I'm not jealous of plastic success. Add Newcastle to that list if and when the time comes too.... I won't covet what they have From where I'm sat you're the jealous one.
At the moment I'm not overly worried about Newcastle, probably because they are starting from quite a way off the pace compared to the top six.
Even with potentially a lot of money at their disposal, it will still take a while for them to get amongst it there are no guarantees.
I would like to think by that time we may have got ourselves back in the mix and hopefully provide a credible threat.
Of course none of us know what or if the club will spend any money or whether it's a trolley dash through Aldi, I'm sure the chairman is aware that the squad needs investment along with competing in the world's best stadium otherwise what is the point in hiring a manager like Jose to compete for mid table.

I agree.

Our most successful period has been finishing 2nd, getting to a Champions League final and an FA Cup semi final twice.. What success is that? If we saw Woolwich celebrating that we'd laugh at them.

I love Poch as much as the next guy, but he has a block when it comes to silverware. He hasn't won any so he doesn't understand the feeling.

If Mourinho was in charge during that spell, we would have won either the league or at least a cup. I'm not saying Mourinho is going to be an instant success, but if the players listen to him, he'll win us something.

United finished 5th, won the league cup and Europa league under Mourinho in 1 season, whilst we were celebrating finishing 2nd with no silverware. Something needs to change.

I dunno how you guys would cope if you supported another traditionally big side like Everton/Leeds/Villa/Newcastle etc..

all sounds a bit entitled.

It’s not entitlement at all. You can’t class finishing top 4 for 4 seasons in a row success if you aren’t improving on it. A CL final is special, but I wanna need win the final. You don’t get anything for runners up.

We have been linked with him a bit...

Dries Mertens will sign a new contract with Napoli: confirmed and here we go! Total agreement reached until June 2022. Paperworks time between the club and Mertens lawyers. He decided to stay - refused Chelsea bid some weeks ago. Official announcement soon.
