Manager Jose Mourinho

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

We're second in the league and still in all of the other competitions we are taking part in.

Why are people acting like the season is over after our second league defeat this season?

Obviously it stings losing to Liverpool. But a lot of teams lose to Liverpool over the course of a season.

Step by step. Game by game.
100%. Embarrassing some of the hysteria on here. We lost narrowly at Anfield where they have not lost since the big bang. We are languishing second in the league, further away from top spot than the Andromeda galaxy. Sack the bastard!

I had top 6 as my minimum for the league going into the season and one of the cups to build some winning mentality/feeling in the squad. But with the run we went on up until last night night I now want top 4 and a trophy.

But I am going to remain grounded and say EL spot at minimum next season for the league.

I said top 6 before the season started - but then we added Reguilon, Bale, Vinicius and Rodon to give us our best squad in decades and started integrating Ndombele into the side and that changed my mind to top 4.

Seeing how the rest of the teams are shitting the bed and we have a serial winner in charge, I think top 3 is reasonable. Anything less than that for me now would be a total disappointment. And if it's another trophyless season, you've got to wonder if Mourinho would need to be moved on.

We need to settle for some kind of middle ground between the defensive solidity we have showcased as of late. And the high octane attacks we showcased early in the season.

Jose's Madrid should be the blueprint and the team that the players study in tape sessions.

I think we'll just have to wait till next season for that. Just don't have the right players for that. A real pacy winger instead of Bergwijn, and a passing midfileder instead of Sissoko would do wonders.

A top 3 finish and a trophyless season would not be good enough. In my opinion anyway. Look at our squad. A top 3 finish should pretty much be a guarantee.

We got Jose Mourinho in to win us something. If he can't win us something, he's failed, no?
Our squad has obvious weaknesses. For one thing, I don’t think we have huge amounts of technical quality by Liverpool’s standards.

Bergwijn actually made me think maybe last night, as he’s looked miles from scoring for most of the season. I thought last night showed the limitations in midfield.

As we were watching the game last night I was telling my boy that 2 x English football managers and Rafa Benitez’ assistant manager had told me, at different times, that individual mistakes in football were the key to the majority of goals. And you can’t coach out individual mistakes. It’s just not possible. You can only minimise them. At a lower league level expect more mistakes.

Literally as I was saying this Kane got the ball and lost it in the centre circle and Liverpool within 3 seconds were in the area and shooting.

Fine margins at the highest level. I’m not the biggest fan of Jose’s brand of football but I’ve set teams up that way myself as a needs must - it’s not pretty but often effective - and as our GD would show he’s playing to our strengths.

I’m interested to see where we are after 2/3 of the season. My bet. Right in contention.

I think our squad can be split up in a few categories.

Mourinho favours them very much:

Lloris - has been immense under the new coach. I believe he is leading the team and the best goalkeeper in the league right now. The defenders can rely on him.
Hart - not so good on the pitch I believe, but I still think he is important in the dressing room, even though people like to talk this down.
Rodon - already ahead of Sanchez in the pecking order. See him playing an important role in this season, especially with our problems at defending set-pieces.
Reguilon - great character and great player. Mourinho can use him as a left-back and a left winger.
Davies - I'm not a fan of him, but I think he can do a good job in a very defensive set-up. Going forward though, he is very ineffective.
Aurier - has gotten so much better. Give him clear instructions on his role and he will give 100%. He cooled his head with challenges.
Doherty - not sure about his technical ability, but a good back-up, considering he was a regular at Wolves.
Höjbjerg - speaks for himself. His role is simple, but vital. Can read the game very well.
Sissoko - he will always profit in a defensive set-up. I like Sissoko very much, he deserves criticism, but he is not as awful as many point him out to be.
Son - goalscoring machine and point perfect runs. Also upped his defensive game.
Bergwijn - Mourinho is trying to develop him into a system player. I think he can succeed.
Lamela - sadly the injuries. I'm pretty sure Mourinho is a big fan, always provocating the opposition.
Kane - same as Son, just improved his build-up game.
(Skipp)

Mourinho favours them:
Dier - he is a regular now and he is defending well enough, but we need that player a level above him. Maybe we will have another try with Skriniar.
Alderweireld - still a very decent defender and our most important one, but his best days are gone.
Tanganga - unsure with all his injuries, hope he can make it.
Ndombele - they have settled their differences and the player is our best midfielder. Hopefully he can build up his fitness and become irreplaceable in the team.
Lo Celso - great player in my opinion, just needs a bit more focus in games to really make a difference. Tough finding the right role for him.
Lucas - defensive winger, but too easy to get the ball from him. Not contributing enough in his games.
Bale - lets see how the season goes on. Might just be the difference in tight games.
Vinicius - I think he deserves more games. Mourinho wanted a physically strong striker and he got one. Maybe we will upgrade on a different striker in the summer.
Clarke - young player, it's not easy to breakthrough in this big squad.
(Sessegnon, Parrott)

Mourinho doesn't favour them:
Gazzaniga - it's obvious. Might see him leaving in winter.
Sanchez - he could've done so much better, but he is a liability on and off the ball. He has to improve dramatically to make the team in the future. Always feel unsafe at the back when he is playing.
Winks - a very, very basic back-up midfielder. Doesn't offer anything special and it's also his biggest weakness.
Dele - same with Sanchez, alot of potential there, but it just doesn't seem to be clicking.
(Rose, Foyth, Gedson, Carter-Vickers)

Obviously with some players it's more inbetween. We do need to upgrade on Sanchez, Winks and Dele in my opinion and they should bring in enough money to get atleast 2 decent players.

As much as I don't like his style of football, I think it suits us well and had we better players we could still be first. Let's face it, we lack some important things in a team, first of all we need at least one more player capable of score goals, we also need a midfielder that could pass the ball. Defense is working well, and that' probably due to Mourinho tactics also, cause Dier is still sloppy and Toby was done last season. The defensive approach suits our problems at the back, with less duties to Toby and Dier, but the lack of a midfielder that can pass the ball, and quickly, also kills our transitions to attack. Had we someone better than Sissoko there we could create more chances I think.

Jose's more-or-less just arrived and we look like we can challenge for the title.

Will we win it? Probably not imo.

Too early for us under a new manager.

But I love being in the mix right at the top, looking like we've really got what it takes.

Now, we're 3 games away from a cup.

We can win it!

I want it!

That's my main focus this season.

That would really get the ball rolling for us irt silverware and is a much more likely achievement.

I'm also excited to see what we'll look like after next summer's window and the next phase of Jose shaping the squad.

I definitely think we can win a cup this season, most cup runs have a bit of luck in them and if we get that then Jose has the experience to get us through.. after all, it would be rather unusual for Jose not to get some kind of cup with a team he is managing.

A suprising amount just haven't got the stomach for it.

......Sad really.

I learned here today we need to sell 19 of our squad otherwise we're gonna keep dropping points all season. :llorishuh:

I agree with others. I like that we are well drilled defensively and hard to break down but it's getting the balance right and having a bit more attacking impetus at times and trying to dominate teams a bit more, then,be defensively resolute when we need to be. Think the balance is a bit out at the moment and need to find a way to get others within the team contributing goals and assists otherwise it's nullify kane and son and spurs have nothing else attacking wise to offer.

Flexibility of choice vs circumstances of the game.

What's the most reliable to get you out of a fix? .....The swiss army knife with 7 tools on it or the one with 9?

Again, not sure I see how it would be advantageous.

The big clubs will still have 3 subs to make (Usually the same sets of players tend to be used) and the smaller clubs will still put their strongest bench out with 3 subs that have benefited them in the past.

Making 5 subs, sure I can understand the disadvantage.

Okay first half, made very good adjustments at half time, bad subs. And we still almost got a result at Anfield. Probably a 6/10 on the night from Mourinho.

The squad is growing but Mourinho needs to as well. The last two matches have shown some of his tendencies that he needs to recognize (overly conservative, defensive oriented subs, waiting for something bad to happen to react).

You can't rely on your team to finish every chance they get in order to win.
