Ex-Spurs Player Tanguy Ndombele

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I must have been blind then because that definitely wasn't the impression I got when watching him a good 25 or so times before he signed or from the reaction of the links and signing him.

There was one article about him being lazy at amateur level, think when he was at Amiens, which was 3 years before we ever signed him.

We've reached the revisionist history portion of the program

I watched Ndombele quite alot that season before we signed him because he came up on a list of Dembele replacements and he caught my eye against City and that's definitely not the impression I got.

And it's certainly nothing anyone else brought up when we were linked or when we bought him either. Bar an issue when he was at amateur level pre-Lyon days.

This was a guy who was one of, if not (alongside De Jong) the best young midfielders in the world at the time. You're not called that if you're lazy without it being seen.

It's just a shame how it ended. Could have been a Spurs great if he had the mindset of some of those around him at the time (Kane, Son, Vertonghen etc). He didn't. He overstayed his welcome, wasted a ton of wages and ended with his career and reputation in tatters.

Good riddance.
I looked mate "all he was known to be lazy" hindsight is just that retrofitting the past. It amounts to one article and a quote. That can't really be stood up. He was a hugely regarded talent that lots of top sides wanted. You can find way more disparaging quotes about players as brilliant and KDB and Mo Salah. If one genius being down about a given young player was the red flag some make out you wouldn't sign anyone. Thankfully this crap is no longer our problem.

Imagine being a complete utter failure at your job, but achieving the highest success and earning an absolute fortune for it. Only in football is failure so heavily rewarded.
This is not true at all. The world is full of people who underperform their contract and are handsomely "rewarded" for doing so as a means to get them to fuck off. The CEO of Boeing, who took one of the most respected names in aerospace and flushed it down the shitter, is going to walk with a $30-50M cashout.

It's the nature of contracts, in any business. You pay people based on their previous performance and hope they'll live up to it. When they don't, you're stuck with it. When they exceed the contract, they're stuck with it.

Saw some twitter account repost a poll from a heavily followed Spurs aggregator that summer listing a number of targets and asking who our priority should be. Tens of thousands of votes and Ndombele was first by a mile.

We were drooling for him, he was the next Modric/Dembele.
He looked a cracking player. Clearly has a ton of ability and flair.

But he's a prime example of not judging a player based off a YouTube compilation.

The dude has a shocking work ethic and an incredibly poor attitude, something that was apparently well documented before we signed him. If he had the work ethic and mentality of someone like Harry Kane, he'd likely be one of the best players in the world. But because of his weak mentality, he'll never amount to anything, on the football pitch and in life.

Fuck him.
