When it comes to strange, I don't think there is anything unusual in being overjoyed at winning a cup but being very concerned by such a pitiful overall performance in the league. Domestic league performance is the best marker of how good/strong a team actually is and in most other seasons we would have been fighting a relegation battle.
The reason I question Ange's competence at this level is because he was willing to throw his attacking principles out of the window to win the EL with a very decent squad but did not show the same pragmatic, tenacious approach when a lot of our best players were unavailable to stop us sinking in the league. We looked devoid of structure and form for so much of the season. We became easy to beat. His 'we never stop' approach caked away and he was exceptionally poor at adapting to the challenges our B team faced. And folk can argue his case but, as always in football, the results have the final word.
I'll always be grateful to him and the players for getting us the EL trophy - it is what I wanted more than anything, no doubts. But this isn't a game played on one stage. The bread and butter is the PL and we need someone who can navigate us through it at a higher level if we're to maintain our standing as one of the big PL teams.
