Probably the fact that at the age of 21 he’s never kicked a ball at PL level and couldn’t get into this or any other PL team which is why he needs a loan to a lower level league.

I think that might be it.

The fact that after Ange got fucked by having to play a load of untried and inexperienced kids now our fans want the same thing to happen to Frank is batshit crazy to me.

Frank needs to stand his ground and get men in this team who can compete in the CL.
It’s that simple.

What does Frank "standing his ground" look like? Is he supposed to go full Conte and rant to the media ?

Just do as he is doing right now. Tell levy he wants to loan out the youth. He doesn’t want them in the squad.

Give them a squad number and then it looks like we have plenty of bodies. Pointless.

If he goes into the season with less than 20 experienced players in the squad -as per last season - it’s pretty obvious the club has let him down.

Gray and Bergvall. Plus a few in easy EL games. Harsh to say he got fucked by having to play them.
I'd say he fucked himself more by playing the way he did.

In a season we had a guaranteed 50 games we started the campaign with 18 senior outfield players.
1 of those was Sergio Reguilon. Plus Bentacour was facing a guaranteed ban of some description.

If you think that constitute a strong squad then fair enough. Ange seemingly did as well.

I agree, it wasn't a strong squad. But I'd argue that Ange fucked himself more by not playing enough youth than if he had actually played them more. Plus the youth would probably have been better prepared for this season if he had.

Too often last season it was boys against men.

I fail to see how playing more kids would have helped. Loan them out. Most of them aren’t CL standard or anywhere close to it right now.

Not that different from other clubs though in terms of numbers, City started last season with 18 outfield senior players including the likes of Rodri who started the season with a hamstring injury before his ACL after 1 game back and McAtee who hadn't really broken through.

The assessment of the coaching staff!

Again, this whole line of argument strengthens MASSIVELY if we ever have a SINGLE player, ONE guy, who blossoms into a Top 6 worthy player after we've given up on them.

Hasn't happened since Peter Crouch in 2000, pre-Levy.
All the way up the age grades and as a professional Alfie has been the best player on every team he has played in. The idea he can't help us out in the League Cup or a dead rubber in the Champions League is hard to swallow.

Definitely not true at Westerlo or Plymouth, by far the two highest levels he's ever played at.

It is the nature of young players that the level of competition they are playing against rockets upward from anything they've previously seen at this stage of their careers.

Well, he is going to head to at worst a promotion-contending Championship side here shortly, and if he DOES have those capabilities, he's going to smash it on that loan and return to us a precious club-trained player under UEFA rules.

Nope- we’re just going to play a lot more 4-3-3 than people were hoping for. I think at this point Frank will not be insisting on another CAM signing until at least the winter window, and that makes sense- with Pahlinha in we have a full set of CMs and CDMs for the purpose.

It may not make us worse at all- it may make us tougher to beat than shoehorning in an average or worse CAM.

Ali G did say yesterday the priority was an AM and a CB, so let's see............

It's not like he was set to relegate Maddison to bench status before the injury.

Keeping him here for the sake of 2 or 3 part-games is terrible development strategy.

Westerlo moved him around several positions because he was effective in filling gaps. From his scouting report:

"KVC Westerlo decided to sign Devine this season after his impressive pre-season at Spurs. Since then, he has been a regular for the Belgian club. In this scouting report and player analysis, we will examine what makes Alfie Devine so effective ..."

He would play more than that,

Baseless claim, fella.

- If we get past the first couple of rounds of the LC we'll likely encounter premo oppo at that point and have to take it serious.
- How many "dead-rubbers" can there possibly be in 8 CL game? (Games where you literally bag millions of £s for every win!)

......Regardless, I responded to what you did post (rather than what you didn't).

I think he would be the best option furthest forward in a 3 if that is what Frank has in mind. Give the lad a chance to show what he can do, he has always taken them in the past.

He's had pre-season and (most importantly) training camp to do that.

The notion that opportunities with the home club are "a chance" and "faith" but opportunities on loan are "binning off" and "giving up" just isn't correct.

All of our loanees have a career-shaping season of football ahead of them. Opportunity knocks.
I get that, but if Frank wants to play with an attacking midfielder "10" (which we don't really know) and Maddison is done for the season then what are the options?

Cherki would have been great, well that ship has sailed (if we were ever in the picture). We could try to bring in a veteran like Eriksen or Griezmann for a season ... I wouldn't be mad at it. Or we could look at what we have in the squad, and looking at the options I don't see a better one in that position than Alfie.

We either buy one or change strategy (on pitch).... Hinging our season upon Devine would be crazy (and grossly unfair on him).
