Player Rodrigo Bentancur

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He never was a great possession footballer. Has only ever seemed to thrive in counter attacking sides, including Uruguay. Juve were ok with selling him for a reason.

Do you remember one of Bentancur's first games back after injury against Villa?

I think it was Autumn 23.

He ran the game.

So much so Matty Cash took him out, while Spurs were winning, and Villa then stole the points.

That player has gone.

Left the building.

Ange has ruined the decent players he had with injury and lack of discipline.

It needs addressing.

He had a few good games in there but on average he's always been a very defensive, active midfielder. Cash should have been banned for that shit challenge, but he persists.

It was a cynical ploy by Villa, to take out Bentancur that day, but deliberate.

It worked too.

My point is that game was early under Ange.

Two years of no coaching, shit tactics and losing most weeks has finished some of that group.

Bentancur is just one of a few.

Fair- I agree he has not benefitted from Ange's lack of coaching. He seems to have regressed even in his willingness or ability to carry the ball.

One thing you have to know and you probably notice about Uruguayan MF.
They have not had any real WC or even great offensive minded MF since Francescoli who played in the 80s in his prime and Zindane based his game on his play. Even named a son after him.
And Alvaro Recoba who played for Inter Milan mainly in the 90s.

Since then they develop these MF who look the part and then either because they played under the previous Uruguayan Coach who had great success or it’s just in the DNA? Even Valverde has problems being a real playmaker. He has the ability and seems stunted. Maybe it’s the only 3 million population to pick from and you only have so much talent to have for positions.

We have Forlan. Cavani. Suarez. We have Lugano. Godin. Jimenez on defense. Without the strikers we are the Greece of SA. The defensive good Greece in the early 2000s.

The talent has to take a hit somewhere and it’s disappointing that it happens in the MF. Rodrigo looked the part in the Under WC and his first few seasons in Italy. Then you thought well it’s Italy and they play conservative. I was surprised he went to the PL. I was encouraged by his play and then the injuries and the regression.

Now it’s just depressing following him and being a lightning rod of hate even when he does score.

surprise surprise, he starts and we are poor.

worrying that frank keeps opting for him to start in these sort of games.

not sure what frank envisions with a lineup consisting of him next to palhinha and a poor forward line?? how do you think the games going to go with that? palhinha needs a midfielder next to him who can actually play forward and break the lines.

as soon as you see bentancur starting and tel up top, you know the odds are seriously stacked against us!

WAKE UP FRANK!

that pass back to VDV that went out for a corner...absolutely shocking from a midfielder to play a pass back to a left footed CB like that.

Roddy's lost his mojo and should only be used in rotation with Pal. Feel for the guy - since his injury he's completely lost the initiative and confidence to progress with the ball. Likely being instructed to play in a holding role too.

Pal-Sarr-Xavi with Berg/Gray rotating the progressive 8 role is the way forward imo. The lack of midfield mobility was a stinker last night.

So fed up with him.

Frank really has to learn his lesson.
Bentancur is totally useless in most of the games - he is clinically afraid of the ball. Looks first player to pass it back or at best someone who is on the same line as him. Poor and basic passing that slows everything down. And defensively he is 3 levels behind Palhinha too.

He just offers nothing. No passing, no defending, no carrying of the ball.
Ok, only thing I can bring in as positive - he attacks the dead-ball deliveries with headers. But that is not really enough, is it?

He should currently be behind Palhinha, Sarr, Bergvall and Gray. But somehow Frank always starts with him. It is outright stupid.

So why Frank keeps picking him despite his obvious flaws going forward?

Yeah, cause in 2nd game in short time (Monaco now, Wolves before international break) team collapses and loses any control the moment he comes off the pitch.

Frank need to find a way to either
1. Unlock more progressing passes from Bentancur, or

2. Somehow keep balance in the team/midfield with more offensive player in place of Bentancur or Palhinha, or

3. Find other solutions in other than 6/8 positions. Maybe Xavi will get his shit together (im sure we would look like different team with Maddison in the midfield). Or maybe with Muani/Solanke recoveries we will look better in any midfield combination just by having a 9 that can hold the ball.

Don't see 1 or 2 will be answer in short term with current personel. So i have my hopes on resolving AM and CF situation.

When Bentancur first came to Tottenham under Conte he’d play so many passes into Kane who’d turn and open the game up to Sonny or whoever. If you are playing where he is and Richarlison or Tel is your option to fire it into then the likelihood is you don’t pass it forward.
He’s not become a bad player. I think when he went off on Wednesday we lost any sort of structure in midfield and became far too open.

Unless the new contract was just to up his re-sale value, then it's a huge mistake. Guy looks too comfortable and will never be the player he was. Need someone who gives a fuck and makes things happen. Not this guy.
Disagree that he doesn’t give a fuck. He’s just the same as nearly every other midfielder in that they don’t pass the ball forward. We need a striker that can take the ball in and not be a snooker cushion. I guarantee we’ll play more passes forward which will open the game up.
I’m clutching here but I’d take Toney on a short term contract. He’s someone who can get us up the pitch and won’t lose it much when it gets played into him. Instantly our midfielders will offer more

Yeah, fair point. I'd overstated things a bit. And you're right that part of the reason the MFs look poor is that the forwards (Kudus aside) are poor. I am hopeful that Solanke and RKM fit will change things significantly, even if they aren't Toney, still less Kane

The good thing is that I am confident Frank knows all this very well.

The signs were there with Muani that he can hold it up and get us up the pitch. Solanke is very good at it and we miss him.
