Player Rodrigo Bentancur

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Yeah - I'm guessing Frank just wants a few experienced options in midfield and, knowing we were 100% losing Bissouma in the summer, felt that having Bentancur in the squad was important. He's got his obvious limitations but he can cover a couple positions and do a reasonable job.

Problem is, if we buy Palhinha (which seems likely) we've got a real bottleneck in that 8 position as I think it's Bentancur, Gray, Sarr AND Bergvall's best position. Sarr and Bergvall can play further forward but I don't think they excel there beyond occasionally playing Sarr as a hard pressing, box-crashing 10 against really good teams.

Assuming (please god) we buy a passing midfielder in one of he next 2 windows, I don't know how we're gonna balance midfield minutes - it doesn't add up and one or two players will need to be sold or loaned.
Agree- it’s a conundrum. I’m hoping all the younguns get rolling and push Benta down to a backup 6 option. I want to see a proper 4-1-2-3 type cm with bergvall and sarr at the 8, and 4-2-3-1 with sarr/berg next to palh, and 4-3-3 with gray, berg and sarr flanking palh

For me rn CM depth:

CM: Berg, Sarr, Gray, Benta
CDM: Palh, Benta, Gray

Should never have given him a new deal, gives more problems than solutions in how we play. Would rather see someone take his place from the youth or would like us to buy Alex Scott - better technically and would run through walls for us being a fan himself.

You give a new deal as a minimum to protect his future sell on value, even if you’re looking to upgrade his position.

I understand this but should have moved him on in the summer but appreciate Frank wanting to have a look pre season. My bigger issue with our challenges in moving players we no longer need on in the country club set up with our training ground facilities that players don’t want to leave.

How you feeling today Richy? You hungry? How about we’ll make you your favourite omelette and have a massage whilst you watch Sky Sports News. I wouldn’t be in any rush either to want to leave.

Fixed it for you.

No one will be loaned.

I can see Bentancur being phased out if the youngsters continue on their trajectory.

Hopefully we add a shithot passing 6.

Next season:

6: NEW, Palinha
8: Sarr, Bergvall, Gray, Bentancur
10: Xavi, Maddison, (Kulu)

He's not been great, especially since his injury, but he has his moments and was a step up from Winks and Sissoko.

He needs to do more and he needs to do more; more often.

If he can't he will need to be replaced.

I think if that's the plan we'd be better off loaning Gray and getting him some serious minutes elsewhere tbh. 40m signing or not, he's simply not gonna get enough gametime to develop if he's 4th choice in his best position, barely playing there and getting occasional mins at centre back and full back or in league cup games. He's gonna need consistent game-time in midfield if we ever want him to have any hope of living up to his potential.

Maybe if we phase out Bentancur and Gray takes his minutes gradually it could just about work but I'm sceptical tbh. Especially with Sarr and Bergvall also in competition for the same spot and us presumably bringing in another player to cover at full-back.

yep, juventus were spot on when they priced him up at 19m.
I think we got a pretty good deal there to begin with at least - certainly by modern transfer fee standards. He was very good under Conte. Easily one of our best and most important players under him and it's no coincidence Conte's 2nd season started to fall apart once he got injured.

Woulda been a bargain if it wasn't for the injury. I agree he's looked like a 19m player since he's come back, though.

We looked worse on Saturday without him. Gained a bit more control when he came on. Everyone was looking for a reason or a scapegoat why we are/were struggling and a couple decided it was Bentancur and now it’s kind of just stuck and taken as the definite.

He can handle the ball under pressure much better than Sarr, better than Gray, and better than Bergvall although I think Bergvall will end up being a better player. I think the problems in midfield are structural and taking him out of the side hasn’t changed anything, positively anyway. no coincidence that every manager has played him when fit.

True, but if you don’t sell him and his performance level drops, he ends up chilling out for a few years not doing much. We’ve been down that road plenty of times.

I think the reality is the club is often happy to keep players the fans would like to be replaced. They are 2 different agendas.

True we need to get better at shifting players, but I don’t think letting a £20m-£30m player walk out the door for nothing makes sense either.

Bentancur is upgradable, but he’d also be a useful squad player behind someone more elite.

It's in vogue to shit on him now but the reality is we don't have better options for most situations. That is why Frank has played him so much.
