Yeah put him in a team that dominates the ball and doesn't have to do as much penalty box defending he'll look brilliant. He's as good at anyone in the world at mopping up in a high line, chasing down runners and running forward with the ball. It's when you want him to sit deep, make blocks and win headers in the box you're in trouble.

He's the type of player that will elevate a team that has lots of possession but isn't built for scrapping at the bottom and playing Frankball shite.

Reckon he'd be ideal for Barca (well...until his hamstrings explode again)

Sounds like a wing-back?

I reckon if he went to one of the mega-clubs he would end up playing a fair bit at full-back, yeah. A bit like Kounde at Barca who plays a lot at RB. I think in his first season under Ange he showed how effective he can be at CB in an attacking system, though.

Yes, Ange deployed him perfectly and his partnership with Romero was ideal.

Romero built from the back, and provided the pass through the opponents midfield.

VDV was there to chase down through balls and put pressure on runners. He was also able to step out from CB into midfield areas and allow our mids to push up the pitch. This worked best when Holjberg was able to drop in and back him up in case of a lost ball.

Dragusin / Davies / Grey didn't share any of the same attributes as Romero/VDV and hence they made costly mistakes.

Frank allowed our CB's to be put under pressure. Spurs sat deeper. This prevented though balls, but in turn put more pressure on the CBs. Instead of playing the offside trap, or out running strikers - they were now asked to defend crosses, deep in the 18 yard box, and position themselves off the ball to block shots rather than attempt a tackle in a dangerous area.

Looks likely that VDV and Romero will be off in the summer - so will be interesting to see what profile of defender Di Zerbi wants. Its essential that the primary AND backups can play the same style and formation.

Such a huge risk selling both your starting CBs though.

I can't even decide if Romero and VDV are good players anymore.
Romero is too erratic, goes charging off out of position at least once every game. Misses a lot of matches every season through suspension. And let's face it when an International break is on the horizon has both eyes on that.

With VDV this season I've noticed he is actually pretty shit on the ball. He shines when he is asked to chase players down. His defending outside that is questionable.

I agree with others these two probably need to go.

If we were one or two pieces from being a top side you would want to keep them but we are miles off. The next 2 seasons are about stabilizing the ship and developing the young players to see what we have got there. We need solid defenders like the pair at Forest rather than World Cup winners right now.
Those two at Forest are in a relegation fight too but when I see them I think they are good players. People think the same about Romero and VDV.

Goldbridge kicking off that VDV linked to Utd. Think VDV is a bit too big for his boots if he thinks a top club is coming in.

He is a Hollywood player so will get lots of offers. Romero as well. I’d happily take a bet a backline of Vuskovic and Danso will be more solid than those two. Romero is erratic and VDV’s head is all over the place but VDV has insane pace and Romero is stylish.

Romero is a beast when wearing the La Albiceleste. For us, we only see that player occasionally. He hasn't been a great leader either and like you said misses quite a few matches through suspensions albeit I feel he is refereed very differently from other players. I definitely think he will leave this summer regardless of whether we stay up or get relegated. Not sure what fee would be but would imagine something around 55m-60m. As for VDV. I don't even think he's a CB. He is poor in the air and doesn't have good positional sense. I would try converting him to a LB but in terms of if he will leave. My guess is that like Romero, regardless of our PL status, I can see him moving on for a similar fee to a top club that plays with a high line. Barca or PSG.
