Apparently Liverpool didn't want Alonso, as they don't like his style of play. According to a journalist on Radio 5, a couple of weeks ago.

I think Iraola if he goes there, and can get them flowing would stand a better chance than Slot would have done. Better chance of competing with that lot, City, and United.

I also think it might be a matter of resources, and whether the Liverpool hierarchy think Iraola can get more out of less than what Slot might have wanted to bring into the club. All speculative of course.

Not necessarily as Alonso is still relatively new to it all but he did feel nailed on to take over at Liverpool.
I think it's a bit of a shock that they've fired slot now after missing out on Alonso because if they'd have acted quicker...
Alonso would certainly have the fans onside from the start, it would have been a massively popular appointment.

People are acting like Alonso was nailed on for the job but there is a realistic chance that Liverpool actually preferred Iraola. Especially as their Sporting Director has already worked with him.

Would also explain why Alonso took the Chelsea job, if he felt that even waiting for the Liverpool job didn't guarantee he would get it.

Ahem, you're forgetting that we've got RDZ now?! 😁
Ha. Love him. But you are forgetting we still got
ENIC. RDZ could do amazing next year & miss out on the title by a point. Rather than back him to get us over the line the following season. ENIC would do a summer of no signings & sell our best player.
It’s a shame as you know our ceiling under ENIC is top 4 & a cup.

Agreed. I'd find it gobsmacking if they had already considered Alonso but weren't interested. I wonder if he's getting some buyers remorse at Chelsea already.

Still, I won't complain. Their drop off this year was quite something, Salah is gone, and who knows how high we might be able to climb if we sign the right players, things with De Zerbi 'click', and only have domestic football to worry about.
Saw some dippers saying Liverpool weren't prepared to give Alonso a big say over transfer strategy, so they were never seriously in for him.

Yeah which is kind of ironic given pre-Alonso Chelsea were probably the club that gave their coaches the least say over transfer strategy in the entire league.

I presume they'll appoint Iraola now, and he might be a great appointment, but I still think they'll probably regret not appointing Alonso when he was right there.

I’m not sure iraola can win them the league though, which is what they want.

The Slot arc reminds me a lot of the Ten Haag arc at United.

2 very hyped bald dutch blokes that really nearly came to Spurs, had good/great first seasons in the Premier League making me thinking 'ffs why didn't we appoint them' only for them to completely shit the bed and come across as bellends before getting sacked.

Ten Haag always gave me odd vibes but the way Slot completely fell off is quite surprising. Feel like nothing really worked for him this season and he got a lot wrong. Came across as very arrogant by the end - like he won the title and bought into his own hype?

Yeah it's a huge step up. Never managed a big club, never managed in Europe, wasn't a well known player outside of Spain.

I massively rate the job Iraola did at Bournemouth, but I don't think it's a given he'll make a seamless transition to a big club. At Bournemouth apparently he makes the players come in to train every single day. I'm not sure you'll get away with that kind of thing at a club like Liverpool. Plus he plays a very intense style and hasn't ever had to juggle regular midweek games.

I think he's a considerably bigger risk than Alonso would've been who was a club legend as a player, as well as won trophies and got to a major European final as a manager.

There is obviously much to be said for a full head of hair. Martin Jol might have lasted slightly longer. Less prominent hair loss.

Or it might just be a load of twaddle.
