This man is working wonders at this club.

Even when he's away on vacation, the long shadow he casts has everyone scrambling to outperform in his absence.
Conte deserves credit but more than any one individual, our situation is the biggest motivator for how levy is conducting his business now.

We were staring down the barrell of long term midtable mediocrity, with Kane gone, Mou, Nuno, Ndombele, Lo Celso all duds etc. I think Levy also recognised the looming threat of Newcastle.

So he/Lewis was forced to take drastic measures. They gave into Conte's demands in February, gave Paratici the chance to bring in Benta and Kulu in Jan and of course the cash injection.

And again: "Obviously now let's see what Ten Hag will do who has my support but honestly even if they had brought any chef to Manchester United they would have had my support".

Inside Antonio Conte's gruelling Tottenham training sessions with motto "die but finish"

Sergio Reguilon says no-one is spared under the Italian's demanding regime - and reveals the trick he's learned for avoiding exhaustion in matches - with Tottenham storming into Champions League fight.

Antonio Conte praised Harry Kane's work ethic after their win over Newcastle but it isn't just the England captain putting a shift in for Tottenham lately.

For the Italian got Spurs ready for their Champions League push by making them do gruelling double training sessions during the international break. Some Tottenham stars famously complained about that when Mauricio Pochettino tried it, but it seems that Conte has convinced his players to shape up.

The Spurs boss has THREE conditioning specialists on his coaching staff, including Gian Piero "The Marine" Ventrone, whose motto is "Die but finish." And while Kane and co were away playing for their countries, everyone else at Tottenham was being put through their paces in challenging double sessions.

Full back Sergio Reguilon said: "They are tough. Really tough. For the manager, you can rest after the end of the season, not during it! Our work in them depends on the day, but it is tactical, technical and in the gym - that's the worst for me. And it's also run, run, run, run. I think it is necessary for us though.

"We know that in the international break the players that remained here in London needed to work hard, stay fit, and for that we did double sessions. Not only one either. We did a lot. Our team-mates were playing games, working hard for their national teams, but we had to be ready for when they came back so we could be at the same level of fitness."

Pochettino used to do the same thing, turning Tottenham into the Premier League's hardest working side and taking them to a Champions League final. "Even in international breaks," former Spurs and England full back Danny Rose once revealed, "He’d see the ones who would go away as having a holiday because training isn’t as hard with your national team. So if you weren’t in the national team you were getting beasted in training."

Spurs players were complaining that training was becoming too tough towards the end of Pochettino's reign. But some felt that things slipped too far the other way under Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo, and Tottenham now look fitter and stronger for the run-in.

And they have piled the pressure right back on Woolwich ahead of their clash with Crystal Palace tonight by climbing above the Gunners into fourth. Even Reguilon, who is still recovering from Covid, did not escape Conte's double sessions, and though he missed the Newcastle game he is sure he will feel the benefits later this season.

He said: "After Covid still it is a little bit difficult. My feeling is I didn't recover 100 per cent. But this is football, this is life. You have to be ready for everything." Pochettino used to joke that players in rehab used to be desperate to come back quickly "because we kill them when they are injured. They have double sessions every day!"

And Conte is certainly following the same path. But Reguilon admits that when it comes to matches, it is just as important to conserve your energy. He said: "Sometimes I have to control my efforts because when we have a counter-attack I want to arrive in the other box as much as possible.

"But you also have to factor in that I begin in my own box and have to sprint 80 metres - and I then have to get back as well. After a game I would see I'd run run 11km and one of those would be at full speed. From there I understood what I needed to do.

"If I was doing those sort of runs constantly, I would arrive at the 80-minute mark exhausted. If I did it every game, maybe I would have to stop playing each season in February!"

Interview Ventrone by Tuttosport about athletic training, championship and world cup

Giampiero Ventrone, Juventus' historic athletic trainer who works for Tottenham today, comments on a particular year due to the World Cup: «It is the first time ever. It is not so important to talk about what you will do as exercises but about the strategy you will want to launch to face this anomalous season. And here you can make various decisions. The club retreats will begin towards the beginning of July, there will be five to six weeks of pre-season. The teams will be able to run a lot, defining it preparation would be an excessive form, it is a question of reactivating the players to prepare them for the new season ».
The trainers will be able to organize a different path between players who will go to the World Cup and those who will not compete in the competition?
"This is a much more complex idea to pursue. I quote Conte: during the tactical exercises, the players move for 6-7-8 kilometers, the outside players even more. If we do not want to keep in mind the tactical aspect, but only the physical one, we must not forget this type of work, which certainly does not have a poor physical value ".
But is it true that nowadays people work much more with the ball and have the "only" physical exercises changed?
«The watershed of 2005. Since then, most of the staff have understood that to ensure that the player's energy cost is lowered, it is better to work in specific sport conditions».
Will there be a greater risk of injury this year?
"If you do not train the athlete constantly over time, there is no way that in twenty days this work can guarantee you months and months of autonomy. It is a very complex subject, but to make training individualized you need quality infrastructures and spaces without competitions they are a luxury. The recovery, on average, is two full days, including bruises. After three days the players can have a good training ».
After the World Cup, he will have to
be supported a new preparation?

“It depends on how we think. Those two weeks are for the coaches to review the tactical aspects and train on a technical level. The best solution is probably that the athlete is balanced, a machine ready to push hard. I am not concerned with improving performance to make it more powerful and resilient. There is no time! You can have flat tires, a system
plumber not working well. So I use that little time to put the athlete back in balance ».
What exercises can be done?
“If I think like the average, I will support aerobic work, now called metabolic. Improved coordination workouts, strength is dying out in this sport, the loads are light. Our organism has specific physiological bases ».
How important is the head in the behavior of a player on the pitch?
«The performance of an athlete is given by moments of loading with unloading and rest: it is this perfect interaction that brings the best results. If we see that a player enters a latent period, we try to change some things, in agreement with Conte and the medical staff, to solve the problem. I can be tired and run. But it is the decision choices that can determine the quality of my actions. The central nervous system governs our body, we must try to be as fresh as possible. The game is made up of moments: if the player has three chances and scores three goals, he made the most of the situations that happened to him ».
Do you think that some footballers pull the oars on the boat before the World Cup? "It can happen. But the true professional, the one who has a clean image of sport, cannot think that this will happen ".
You in England are used to playing all the time anyway. “For some time now we have been playing players with superior physical prowess. Playing here, with passive recovery times, which are very low due to the few interruptions, forces you to improve ».
So maybe in Italy there will be improvements from this point of view.
«It depends: it's a question of the match and the quality of the matches».

We know Conte is a driven and obsessive character.

Next season, with more variety in the squad, he may tweak the shape of the front 5 a little depending on opponents (Top 4 or bus parkers), but the back 5 will almost always be 3 CBs plus WBs.

Better quality WBs should add a new attacking dimension, but Conte also seems to want our CBs to be able to play through the lines & initiate attacks. Romero can do this, and Dier tries. Ben Davies was outstanding defensively in the last months of the season, and became better in possession, but he's not a world class ball playing CB.

Conte's obsession with Bastoni, a player he developed at Inter, suggests he wants our LCB to be a creative force as well as a good defender. If we can't get Bastoni (unless Inter succumb to an end of June financial meltdown), I can see why he might have switched his fixation to Gvardiol, who is outstanding at initiating attacks, and probably a better defender than Bastoni.

Conte would likely have spoken with Perisic about his Croatian international teammate Gvardiol, about his ability but also his character etc. Plus Gvardiol at LCB & Perisic at LWB would be a great combination.

The price of c80 million is crazy. But Conte is crazy and obsessed too.

Ultimately, Levy would have to sign off any deal, and this one would give him kittens. But Gvardiol is only 20 so, if he is as good as many think, then his resale value is actually going to rise.

I don't expect it to happen. But I wouldn't be remotely surprised if Conte badly wants Gvardiol at Spurs.

this new 5 sub rule benefits contes system more than any other. can keep them wingbacks fresh who without a doubt have the most physically demanding job. probably the most demanding position in football full stop. the only problem is we probably have only 2 wing backs who are sufficient right now in doc and perisic .

The wingback system really does mean those guys have to cover ground and, unlike joggers (Eriksen) they have to do it at speed. To be able to rotate both wing backs in every match could really see us pressure teams until the last whistle rather than blowing out of our arses in the 2nd half.

Whilst I'm not a huge fan of Richarlison, he is better than Lukaku.

And Conte's obsessive training sessions delivered the best football of Lukaku's career.

Did Lukaku forget everything Conte had taught him once he signed for the chavs? More likely, Tuchel didn't know how to utilise the strengths that Lukaku has.

So, if Conte is driving the signing of Richarlison, then he clearly has a plan for how he will fit into our team. I expect his hold up play to improve massively when he plays centrally (if H is out for whatever reason).

And like Diego Costa, a Conte favourite until Antonio told him to feck off out of the club by text message, I anticipate Richarlison being coached into an intimidating, physical, nightmare for opposing defenders.
