Match AZ v Spurs 6 March 17:45

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I think we are out.

They will come, sit deep and wait for that one mistake.
We can't handle a low block at the best of times, and we have a gaff in us every single game.
With the added pressure of this being our one chance of redeeming this season I think their arses are going to drop again..

Small positive at least it ends this farce of a season and manager.

I wager a lot of us can then turn off for the rest of the season and not waste any more energy on this club for a few months

I thought they were shite tbh as were we and expect us to go through

Just got back from this farce, I just can’t see any cohesive system with this bloke. Players are making elementary mistakes repeatedly and the team seems to have no shape at all.
I would seriously tell the players, another performance like that and you can make your own way home.
I’ve rarely seen our fans as irate as they were last night. We are spending hundreds of pounds to support this circus each trip.
WE deserve better.

This actually had the potential to be our best goal scoring opportunity by a mile. A relatively simple counter where a few right decisions could lead to an open shot on goal at worst, a sitter at best. The recipient of the pass in particular, Son, has made himself a career out of taking full advantage of situations like this. What’s not to like?

Take your pick here. A simple one two with Maddison that’d probably leave Son 1v1 with the keeper, rewarding Udogie’s run and letting him deliver a low cross/cutback, or going for the ultimate prize by threading the needle with a pass to Tel who keeps running behind the defender. All would have been better choices than what Son actually does, which is to go for his own shot and have it blocked by the defender as can be seen below.

The chance is gone, and 5 players including Son himself are left behind the play in an instance. But it still shouldn’t be a massive problem, as they have 9 players inside their own third including the keeper. Right?

As I said in another post, Bergvall almost spends more time pressing opposing fullbacks around the touchline than he does defending the centre of the pitch the way CMs usually do. This is another instance of him doing just that, which I assume is by design rather than on his own initiative. This can be very dangerous though, as fullbacks pushing forward also forces centrebacks to stay wide to cover for them which opens up the centre even further.

A nice backheel by the AZ player, and Bergvall is done.Bentancur is the last man standing in midfield, being tasked with covering acres of space by himself.

It devolves into this in a few seconds. Look at all that space, unbelievable. Although it should still be stated that Bentancur messes up by refusing to fully commit to the dribbler until it's too late. I presume that he is wary of leaving the runner(s) on the right wide open. But I’d argue that the priority is to stop the ball, especially when someone is marching forward through the centre of the pitch unopposed.

The situation is terrible so this is not me pointing the finger at him, but Gray doesn't help himself by being in two minds there. He needs to either take a gamble by pushing in front of the defensive line and challenging the player on the ball, or to keep dropping back to prevent the simple through ball to Parrott. He does neither. I sense he tries to offside trap Parrott at the very last second, but the late timing and lack of synchronization with his teammates cause it to backfire.

Vicario saves the sitter, or Parrott misses it. Depends on how you look at it.

Elementariness and more importantly the repetitive nature of some of these errors is a terrible look for not just the manager but also the coaching staff in general. A simple managerial change won’t suffice, it has to be a total cleanup. And it’s clear at this point that Dier was not spouting BS when he talked about how training sessions went under Ange and co.
and it's been happening for months. a fact everyone here is aware of. different players, same errors.

Honestly felt optimistic before the game.
Clasie is their captain - couldn’t really cut it in the premier league - this should be no problem.
Clasie played brilliantly. Tenacious, aggressive and measured.
Why do we stand off players and let them play?
We don’t match a team physically and then the result is that we are always in the back foot.
Embarrassing!!!

Our wingers are dreadful. Maddison isn’t great, but without him or Kulusevski, we can’t create anything.
I donMt have anything against Johnson or Odobert, but they are squad players. If they hope Odobert is going to replace Son, then…
I hope I’m wrong, but without good wingers you won’t make many chances. In this system where our midfield isn’t capable of making that pass or just dribbling to make a chance, we are in a big problem.
Of course it’s on Ange most of the blame, I can’t believe how bad we were after so many days of resting.

Club/team has gone so far back it's in Narnia.
Watching the team lose most of the time is frankly boring.
Don't enjoy watching us anymore, I hate losing, and 18 defeats so far is almost relegation fodder.
We have infrastructure that is the envy of many, the team on the pitch doesn’t reflect that, its the worst Tottenham team I have seen for a while.
Manager isn't worth talking about.

Some good insights, but can you refresh my memory on what Dier roughly said about Ange's training sessions?

As you can see he kind of flipflops, or holds himself back after realizing what he had just implied with his initial statement. And if I have to take a guess he was more interested in praising Conte's methods than dissing Ange's. But IMO we can still extrapolate how those training sessions went from the disorganized mess we've been seeing on the pitch during most of Ange's tenure, in addition to what Dier hints at here.

What I see here is a spectrum. Some managers on the one end are methodical to a fault. They try to drill even the most basics into players' heads -and feet- but at the expense of potentially sucking all the creativity and joy out of their games. Conte is close to this end. LvG was another one, whose football was boring United fans to tears. I guess this approach is more useful for teams full of youngsters learning the ropes, or for ones where players are not that talented.

On the other end, you have managers who unironically let their players "just run around a bit". They have a broad framework, some relatively crude notions on how they want their teams to play, and they want the players themselves to figure things out as they go along. There's a similar trade-off here as well. Letting gifted individuals freely express themselves is hardly a bad thing, but you're doing this at the expense of keeping a solid team shape, staying compact, high positional discipline and such.

Ange seems dangerously close to the second end of the spectrum, as players look lost out there. He is vastly underqualified for this level in general, but he is an especially poor fit for a team consisting of so many youngsters that could do with a more hands-on approach in terms of Xs and Os.

AZ are an OK Dutch side, no more than that. They will probably get tuned up by Ajax in their next game.

Their players are typical Dutch players, good individual technique and they work hard but definitely not world beaters.

Thanks so much for sharing, I remember this now. Dier was definitely flip flopping here and it's clear as day he was giving an accurate assessment of what the training sessions are like. What a complete joke this all is.

And the players have the gall to furiously confront the fans. Cunts.
