Can see Richy being told that, last night, but not BJ.

No way Ange was watching that and thinking its ok.

We push high, so need to recover, effectively.

Especially, against CITY.
Surely with the pace he’d be the one you’d want on the shoulder of the last defender when we win it back. Think Ange doesn’t want any of the three forwards coming back. Before you realise the whole teams camped on the edge of our area. Thats not what you want especially against City.

We push high to try and win the ball back high, if we don’t win it there the defence squeezes up. The idea is not to retreat and drag everyone back. Maybe they all could do better winning the ball back high although I think I saw we were one of the top teams winning it high. Not tracking back Is barking up the wrong tree

The way we play, we need to recover; or get fisted.

Can't leave FBs isolated 2v 1 all day.

Ange's teams work hard front and back.

Not sure why there's this desire to give Brennan a special pass.

No.

We play high risk football. That is definitely what Ange is about. He trusts and is happy to leave the defenders to defend 1v1 and even if the full backs get caught ahead of the ball the centre backs have to get across If you leave the wingers up the pitch, the other team aren’t going to commit the full backs forwards for a 2 v 1 a lot of the time

Anges teams work hard front and back but they do it in specific areas. As I said going by what Son said, what we see on the pitch, Ange clearly doesn’t want everyone getting dragged back. If he did we’d know about it

Not about giving Brennan a special pass. Just not giving him grief for something you don’t know he’s being asked to do.

You play high risk, but you play it smart and don't leave a RB 2v1 all day, with no mind to it.

And certainly not against city.

That's not high risk, that's suicide.

We've seen others play same position/s as BJ, this season and show grit to muck in when needed.

Again, don't understand the desire to write different rules for BJ.

Who were the 2 v 1 all day?

He did nothing to warrant us paying 50m for him. We'll see if we can develop him in to a decent player. Always need to give them one season

I’m hoping that he comes good and maybe Ange can work with him this Summer but I’m seriously underwhelmed so far!

Not giving time-stamps, or clipping up the game.

Watch the game, again, and count how many times BJ gets back, but does it at half pace.

The instruction is, clearly, to help out, when necessary, but he's half-arsed.

Anyway, bored.

Already too much energy on an average player.

He needs to show more, generally.

Simple as that.

It's weird how so many fans defend mediocrity.

I'll never understand it.

Can't believe a fan tried arguing with me that Johnson shows that we should have kept Madueke and/or Edwards because then we'd have a shit winger that cost 0 pounds rather than 47m.

By that logic we should have kept Winks, Tanganga, Dier (PL homegrown) and Josh Onomah.

You don’t have to give a time stamp. Gvardiol was at left back and I don’t think once he went on the outside or ventured deep in our half. The 2 v 1 thing didn’t happen. Dont think Werner was getting back anymore and helping Udogie.

He does need to improve and get more consistent I’m not defending mediocrity, a couple of his attributes are not mediocre. Pace, off the ball movement first touch and picking a cross out have been good up until the last couple of games. Mediocrity is PEH, Skipp, Dier.

I actually thought he worked harder in this game but I don't normally watch from the armchair i.e. at the game I choose what/who I want to look at during the game whilst the TV coverage has the ability to decide for me.

Look at PEH for instance the general (one I concur with) view is that he was one of the better performers yet if I had been at the game I probably would have only remembered the 2 clusterfucks he made and could have cost us 2 goals and a clear reminder he is one of those who cannot be trusted to play Angeball for a sustained period.

Yup. This club’s obsession with “versatility across the front line” will be the death of us. We need specialists, with an opposite strong foot of the wing they play on. There is a reason that any of the best teams you can think of in recent history have all had these types of
Agree but also disagree. Versatility is important and many of the top teams have versatile players. The question is do you have top versatile players or just versatile players?

Alaba, Kimmich, Maddison, Son, Julian Alvarez, Rodrygo, Bellingham, Kane, Rooney, Milinkovic-Savic, Thomas Muller and etc are all top players at their peak and versatile. Players like that would help and I genuinely think the best teams in the world have one or two of these.

Considering we may not be a team that will have 2 world class players per position (so say 6 world class attackers) and spend the money that City do, then having 4 or 5 good but versatile attackers can make us more efficient. It could still work and Ange is still implementing his system.

I think this may become more prominent in Football in the next seasons because sports usually copy cat best practices from other sports and what you are starting to see in the NBA, NFL and even in Cricket is that positional versatility is king. This shift may occur in Football too.

Great post

I didn't think he was all that bad last night. He's been very average thus far it's true, but we really should give the kid a bit of time.

I'd prefer it if he was a bench option and an impact sub against tired legs at this stage, but let Ange work this out.

With everyone back and fit he can be.... It's all been a bit of a baptism of fire since he arrived:

Solomon
Perisic
Gil
Maddison
Richy

All clocking up injuries..... And himself; only to be heavily leaned on once fit.

Gvardiol is a CB playing at LB. Werner had Walker, one of the fastest RB's around on his side. Despite that, more than double City's attacks came down our right/Johnson's side

This is a touch map showing Werner and Johnsons touches. It doesn't really prove that Johnson tracks back less, but just look at the amount and location of Werner's touches compared to Johnson's. Werner is dropping further back into our defensive areas and seeing almost double the ball than Johnson. He's certainly contributing more in terms of defensive game play and offensive build up.

I’d kill to have Madueke and Edwards man…
