Not a coincidence that Brighton is the gay capital of the UK as well.Just had this email from the club, assume it's gone to everyone with a ticket. Sounds like they've fully had enough and decided it's time for a clampdown;
Dear Supporter,
Regrettably, there were sections of those who attended the away fixture at Old Trafford last weekend who took part in and/or instigated unacceptable homophobic chanting.
We should therefore like to remind fans travelling to the Amex Stadium for Sunday’s away Premier League match at Brighton & Hove Albion that the Club takes a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination - our stewards in the away end at the Amex will be wearing body cams to identify any involved so that the Club can take the strongest possible action, in line with our Sanctions & Banning Policy.
For the avoidance of doubt, this includes the Dominic Solanke chant with reference to Mikel Arteta and any use of the term ‘<removed>’ – which the Crown Prosecution Service considers a homophobic slur and hate crime.
Stewards will identify those instigating and participating in any such chants – including those covering their mouths. Abuse and intimidation towards our stewards will not be tolerated either, with bans issued where necessary.
Supporters are also reminded that the unauthorised reselling or passing on of tickets is strictly prohibited – those found to have purchased tickets and subsequently sold or passed them on to other supporters, or offered for sale, will be subject to sanctions by the Club.
We are justly proud of our superb and loyal support, home and away. However, we all have a responsibility to act as ambassadors of Tottenham Hotspur and discrimination of any kind has no place at our Club.
We look forward to seeing our fans come together again at the Amex, supporting the team in a manner that all our fans can enjoy and be a part of.
Kind regards,
Tottenham Hotspur
I've said all I have to say on why that chant is seen the way it is. So all I'll add is that, if you or others do choose to keep going with it, please just ask yourselves why a single chant that tbh would be shit even if it wasn't homophobic is so important to you that you feel the need to keep it up even when queer people from your own team have explained why they find it so alienating to them as fellow Spurs supporters.Yes but we know Spurs have a large element of Jewish supporters so we know those chants are antisemitic . We don't know that the song which mentions Arteta taking it up the ass is referring to homosexuals. Maybe he likes to be pegged up the ass by a woman. There's nothing about Atreta that is gay, so taking something up the ass in general isn't necessarily a gay act. I bet lots of hetrosexual people enjoy anal play.
You've made a false comparison.
I don't use that chant I just don't agree that it's homophobic. Anyway if I ever got arrested by the police for making such a comment, my defence would be I was referring to female/male pegging.I've said all I have to say on why that chant is seen the way it is. For what it's worth, I'm staunchly opposed to criminalisation of this stuff. I think talking to people and changing opinions is the only way to make things better - arresting people only ever makes things worse, and in any case would be utterly unjustified.I don't use that chant I just don't agree that it's homophobic. Only with a little bit of Tina.
As far as we know, Arteta's not gay. But the song is still being demeaning to him on the basis that he supposedly does something normally associated with gay men. It's still reinforcing the societal message that having that type of sex as a man is disgusting, emasculating, worthy of ridicule. As well as creating an inherently hostile environment for queer people, that message and attitude towards anal sex was also a strong contributing factor to the HIV-AIDs epidemic, which killed over 10,000 of us in Britain, 300,000 of us in the United States, and scores more across the globe within living memory for many who're left. And that's why it serves far more to make those of us who are queer and go to games feel unwelcome and unsafe, intentionally or otherwise, than it does to actually have a go at that cunt!
If a comparison helps, we would hopefully all recognise the awful ditties about Auschwitz, foreskins and "fucking Yids" as antisemitic, even if and when they're targeted at a group of Spurs fans who are not in fact Jewish - and while I do not personally think this is on quite the same level of horror as that, the same principle still applies. Mikel Arteta does not have to personally be gay or experience homophobia for the chant to be deeply homophobic in nature.
(Apologies if this is strongly worded - not intended to have a go at you personally at all - I just wanted to try and express the depth of feeling around this chant and why we deem it far beyond the pale)
To be fair you can still have a noisy ground without chanting about someone being gay….Nanny state.
It's football, part of the 'banter' and although it is ugly, I hate the sanitisation of everything nowadays.
It's just all so bland, no wonder why English stadiums are generally so quiet.

Also more importantly Arse players/mangers just shouldn’t be in chants about our players. Solanke (and dele etc) deserve better
Son is a big loss for this game. He thrives against a high line and Brighton are probably one of the few teams in the league who will play a high line against us! Hopefully Werner/Moore can exploit it instead but this game was tailor made for Son. Big loss
Start him on bench after last week's knock/injury.
Yeah not disagreeing with you. I think the lack of a really big game under the lights over the last while is a reason for that. The edge has gone, only song/chant anyone knows is COYS and probably the only one allowed.
I'm up for any song mocking Arteta, the guy is a Grade A cunt. We have sung far worse about Woolwich managers and players. The only song I didn't understand was the one targeting Adebayor, seemed a bit random.
