why would he/did he sign a new contact before going on loan ?
yes it secures him wages for another year(or whatever the contact is) but it tyes him to us

Gil wanted Girona. Girona wanted try-before-you buy. Spurs wanted to retain leverage. So Spurs would have refused to loan him unless he agreed to the contract extension.

It's a reasonable apportionment of risk IMO. Spurs risk getting stuck with an extra year's dead wages, but that's offset by Girona covering some/all of this year's wages, plus the chance ofvSpurs getting a better transfer fee than they could right now. Gil is incentivised to perform well to earn his place at Girona.

I'm not posting the link to who said it but here is what was said

Gil forced his loan move and turned down a move to Feyenoord for €15m. His heart was set on a return to Spain, Gil even threaten to stay at spurs at risk of being an unused squad member which left Tottenham hierarchy very frustrated! Tottenham now use Feyenoord’s €15m valuation as the fixed priced for any club to buy him at the end of next summer!

Gil was being used as leverage in the Santiago Gimenez deal where Gimenez would have cost Spurs just over €25m. Feyenoord where happy to pay the money, but Gil had no interest in going to Holland.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Tottenham has extended Gil’s contract before allowing the loan move. Originally set to end in 2026, this extension is designed to protect his market value. Moreover, Tottenham has included a release clause in Gil’s new deal, allowing clubs to buy him for €15m (approximately £12.7m). This clause adds an interesting dynamic, as it could attract potential buyers while giving Tottenham a safety net.

One of the more unusual aspects of this arrangement is that while Girona does not have a formal option to buy Gil, they will be given the first refusal. Ultimately, the final decision regarding his sale will rest with Gil. Given his desire to join Girona and the possibility of a fruitful season with the club, it’s plausible that he might opt to stay if things go well.

We see Bryan Gil’s loan move to Girona as a win-win for all parties involved. For Gil, it offers a chance to regain confidence and showcase his talent in a competitive league where he has previously thrived. Girona gains a promising player who can contribute to their Champions League campaign and domestic ambitions. Tottenham, on the other hand, protects its investment while keeping the door open for either a profitable sale or a revitalized return.
All good ... though I think "profitable sale" and "revitalized return" are both ever so slightly optimistic

Perhaps "limit their losses" is better

I watched a few games he played when we were first interested in him and he looked good.
Horses for courses. He was right to hold out for a move to Spain.
Not a snowball's chance he returns to THFC so lets hope he continues to play well and we can get some kind of fee.
