1882 Concerning 1882: A View from a Season Ticket Holder

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

As an ST old fart, I have had the best times at WHL when the atmosphere was electric and the noise was deafening. I sit in Lower Paxton these days and I hate it when I can't give vocal support because I would be the only one singing.
Totally agree that the supporters who go just to hurl abuse all the time should hang their heads in shame - .....
....But apart from when you boys start bickering and use foul and insulting language and I just want to bang your heads together, I really enjoy reading and exchanging views with fellow supporters. Long may it continue.

....and lo, it came to pass, @ Mrs Perryman Mrs Perryman became the unofficial Matriarch of this site!!

Excuse me if similar suggestions have been made elsewhere, but can it be suggested to Daniel Levy that the rename an existing block/s as 1882 such that it indicates an intent for what is expected also if i was DL i would lock in a price that attracts those willing to participate in singing/chanting.
The effects would by nature move moaners to supporters. As for the drop in revenue to support a discount to block 1882, really the club i suggest would overcome this in other revenue opportunities.
Now if renaming to 1882 is to contentious surely other historical dates/numbers could give same special intention eg N17, 748, 6061, 1901.

...they should charge the princely sum of £18.82 regardless of Cat A, B, or C!!

Imagine whipping your cheeseboard out at games and dropping your boursin on the floor because some 8 yr olds in the section next to you were singing "we'll sing at half time, we'll sing at half time, we're Tottenham Hotspur, we'll sing at halftime".
Fuck the glory days, I wanna digest some Camembert in peace whilst I digest the glorious sport of association football.

I think it's a symptom of modern football... first, the game/players/tactics itself have been over-analysed to death, ...now the manner of SUPPORT is going the same way too!

I have no loyalty points but stood on the shelf in 1991 on the terraces and helped two streakers get onto the pitch to protest against the gulf war when we played Man U on New Years Day.
+1 million points

No points on the card. No respect from me. That is how i operate.

I don't respect my own dad on the basis he has less loyalty points than me.

Its a harsh world we live in.

:townhmm:

Just read through this whole thread, and for me this is the most worrying comment.

Nutter
The crowd I am certain want to get behind the team, the problem is bar the odd flash of brilliance from Bale there has been little to get behind at home for 18 months.

I don't want to get into an argument, but this really does leave me baffled.

There has been little to get behind - your expectations are obviously unbelievably high then, particularly for someone who has been through a lot worse. I'm only 23, so haven't seen half as many eras of Spurs as you, but things could be a lot worse.

I really don't want to get into the Redknapp/AVB debate about who's team played better Spurs-like football, but the way I look at it is; the reason I support Spurs is because I followed my old man, (his father supports QPR - thank fuck he didn't follow suit), I don't know why he chose Spurs over other London/Essex based teams (where my family is from), but by this chance, I happen to now support one of the best 5 teams in England(/Wales). Of the 92 professional clubs and all below that contribute massively to this fantastic league system, I can proudly say I support Spurs, a huge club in a country laden in football culture, with more teams and leagues than any other nation in the world, and I have done since before I even knew they existed (having been dressed in Spurs kits long before my memories began). I am not a 'plastic' supporter that has chosen a club based on success. My love for Spurs runs deeper than any person that chose to support City or Chelsea following their buy-outs, regardless of whether said fan is a ST holder and has followed them to the far reaches of Europe and spent thousands doing so.

Whether we are playing what you deem as fantastic football or not, I truly believe that if you are in the stands, you should sing and contribute to the performance of the team in a positive way. You can whine, bitch, piss, moan, analyse, swear, insult, sit and sleep from the comfort of your armchair. By sitting mute at The Lane, refusing to make a noise until either we score a goal or we miraculously start playing like a world cup-winning Brazil team, you offer nothing. If anything you are a hindrance to Spurs as there is no doubt in my mind we could fill our stadium with 30,000+ vocal fans wanting to support the players on the pitch regardless of their performance.

There is no doubt in my mind that most of those that refuse to sing will happily yell an abusive remark at one of our players, or even just gesture adversely. Being negative is so much easier than being positive. I am the first to admit that it is very difficult singing when the chips are down, when your luck is out, when the lads can't string 2 passes together. But singing goes a damn sight further to helping them improve than sitting arms crossed analysing Paulinho's pass success ratio, or worse, swearing, moaning and booing players when they make a mistake.

I haven't been to an 1882 game, but anyone that thinks singing at The Lane should be stopped in any way, shape or form, regardless of what stand you are in or what age you are, annoys the fuck out of me.

I will never ever ever understand why anyone would pay the cost of going to a stadium to support your team - and not support them.

Good comment from the front page...

Have found this article from Paul and in particular the comments from Dan a very interesting read and agree with a vast majority of what has been said, with some qualification. I should point out I have never met or communicated with The Fighting Cock or those who organise 1882 and these views are very much my own.

I am a season ticket holder and occasional away traveller and have attended three 1882 games so far (Espanyol, Hull and Sheriff) which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I guess in this sense I perhaps believe the common assumption that appears to be building that the 2 groups are mutually exclusive. It is true that 1882 does seem to have attracted a generally younger demographic of fans (of which I am one at 24) but not everyone who attends is young and many who attend are indeed present at every home game as well. During the three 1882 games I have attended the atmosphere within the 1882 section has been superb, and being part of it has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

In answer to Dan's question about the aim of 1882, I believe that the aim of 1882 is to get the whole stadium rocking rather than a private/cliquey party. 1882 have been very clear that anyone is welcome and it would seem to me that part of the reason for moving down to the Park Lane from East Upper was in order to allow more people to get involved. It is true that 1882 has been communicated almost exclusively via twitter and the internet but this is more a result of the channels available to them then anything else.

In relation to the songs I agree to an extent with Dan. I do believe a greater focus on simpler more well known songs could help to spread the noise around the stadium and make those outside the block feel more able to be involved and included. As a result I believe this would be a very good idea and it is one I will endeavour to support. I would certainly love to see ‘oh when the Spurs’ dragged out for a good ten minute stint at some point next time out. That said, I don't believe it would be desirable to have only those songs known by the entire stadium ‘on loop for 90 minutes’. At the end of the day, singing a variety of songs helps to keep the energy up and makes for a more engaging experience. Many of the songs are not that hard to learn and new songs do have to come from somewhere. As with most things in life it is about striking a balance.

Another key point is 1882 is not an army. There is no one governing what is and isn’t sung. Part of the reason it has been successful in generating noise is people feel confident to start whatever chant they want (within reasonable moral boundaries) and that the people around them, will most likely support them in song. Taking this aspect away could substantially hamper 1882’s efforts. I personally do not deem songs ‘cringe’ or below me because they originated in the lower leagues and prefer to treat them as a ‘bit of a laugh’ even if I cannot muster quite the same passion I can during a rendition of ‘Oh when the Spurs’. If such chants really aren’t your cup of tea then there is no obligation to get involved, just save your voice to help support belt out the classics.

I agree entirely with Paul that fans are under no obligation to sing when attending games, however much I wish they would. People should be able to enjoy the game however they want without fear of derision and without having to stand for 90 minutes. After my evenings spent with 1882 I am exhausted. The delightful elderly gentleman who sits very near my season ticket in East Upper cannot be expected to stand and sing in the same manner and this is where the club needs to step in (as Paul has already mentioned) and ensure that those that are booking tickets in a block allocated for 1882 are informed of what this will likely entail beforehand. As for the chanting relating to the noise and singing in different areas of the stadium I am fairly sure this was intended as no more than friendly banter but if this is not how it has been received then it should stop.

That’s my essay over! I really hope 1882 is able to work through any issues that have arisen and can continue to work to improve the atmosphere in the stadium as a whole while providing supremely enjoyable nights for those of us that choose to get involved. I am glad fans have, for the most part, been able to have a sensible dialogue about this. For those who have been swearing and trolling each other, please stop. We Spurs fans are better than that. All of us.

1882 Causes Issues, but it’s also Good for the Club

First of all, I have been a season ticket holder at Spurs for almost 20 years now and an away game regular. I am only 25 and have grown up with the club. I don’t know any different. I have also been in and around a very hardcore bunch of spurs fans who travel the world to see them and have been going for over 40 years. I am a vocal Spurs fan who sings, shouts and lets my feelings […]

On this point, the two 1882 games I have been to I have been in the West Upper as I was taking my old man and he just likes to take in the game from a good view point. If I had been going on my own I would have bought in with the 1882 lot and sung all day long.

The Eriksen chant that is to the tune of Agadoo. Didnt have a fucking clue what you lot were singing and couldnt join in. Most other songs that were simpler I was joining in with because I could work out the words.

The point of this post being, yes I agree with the quoted sentiment with regard to songs being contagious and that perhaps concentrating on this idea will help everyone else get involved, if this is the main aim. Not necessarily only well know songs, just less complicated ones that can catch on quicker.

Also, what were the words to the Eriksen chant?
