Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Managers have no belief in him until they ran OUT OF Fit Players.
i.e. Management hv no idea who is good especially those who are out on loan(s).

I m sure if Ange have abled bodies - Djed would have been loaned out to his 4th Club.
Possibly but the last club he played for on loan didn't think it was Worth 8m to make it permanent. That's after most of the season playing LB, so some belief in him.

Not quite true.

See this reply for the timeline of Spence's season to date. It's a fairly straightforward trajectory for a formerly fringe player getting - and taking - his chance and now cementing his place in the first team squad.

The salient point is that the idea Spence only got a chance because of injuries is a complete myth. He was being integrated into the first team rotation long before Udogie did his hamstring in late December.

This meme has got completely out of control. You have no idea what Ange thinks/thought about Spence. So let's try and address facts, eh?

We know Spence was on the verge of being flogged to Genoa last summer. We don't know what happened next but presumably he went to the manager and stated he wanted to try and break into the team. Postecoglou gave him one last chance - one that all of Spence's previous managers except Steve Cooper hadn't.

That is fact. All we know for certain is that Spence was about to flogged for a loss. but ended up staying.

So now he's bottom of the pile. He has to prove himself. Train hard, show willing and fight for his chance.

That chance came against Coventry on 18th September. Came on second half - out of position as LB - and was great. Took his chance. Now he's caught the eye but he's still got a lot to prove. Porro is clearly number 1 RB; Udogie clearly number 1 LB. So it's going to be hard.

He's on the bench for the 3-1 win over Brentford. Fair enough. Still got a long way to go to break into the PL team.

He then gets 45 minutes in the win against United. Replaces Udogie (who is not injured just rested) for the second half and again plays well out of position. He's now trusted by the manager to have PL minutes when we're in good position. And is now an option to rotate in game out of position LB/RB. He has the managers trust. This is going well. He's moving up the squad ladder.

Then its the Brighton game - he almost certainly would have made a sub appearance if we were in control but disaster strikes and we throw away a 0-2 lead. Postecoglou relies on his 1st teamers to get out of the mess they created. Mistake? Probably. Understandable - probably. Most managers don't turn to fringe players to get them out of a jam.

And what happens next? Spence gets a groin injury. He misses 3 games. Back on the bench as an unused sub for Ipswich. Comes on late in the City win to help see it out. This groin injury is a set back. This is what stalled his progress.

The next 3 games is where Postecoglou leaves him on the bench as we suffer a series of disappointing results. This is the one patch of the year where you can legitimately say Postecoglou made a mistake. But considering Spence started at the bottom of the pile he wasn't getting ahead of Porro and Udogie who were NOT INJURED and we desperately needed results and under pressure managers rely on what they know has worked for them. But, yes, feel free to have a crack at Postecoglou for this stretch of games.

But Djed keeps going. Doesn't drop his head. Finally gets his chance when he starts against Southampton. He's great.

And hasn't missed a game since EXCEPT for the Wolves game where he was suspended. The Wolves game was where Udogie did his hamstring. Spence couldn't have played because he was suspended.

And since then he's played every game hes been available for and has now proved himself beyond doubt.

Those are the facts. If you look at them and still want to continue this fantasy that Postecoglou never gave him a chance or never believed in him then I'd suggest you are exhibiting "cult like" behaviour.

In this shitty clusterfuck of a season the one good thing - one feel good story - has been Djed Spence turning his career around with the help of the manager who gave him a chance.

Oh - and the REAL MISTAKE Postecoglou made wasn't in not believing in Spence (he clearly did as shown above) it was NOT BELIEVING in Brandon Austin. If he did then Spence gets in the EL squad over Forster and the whole process outlined above would have been accelerated.

I wonder if he had issues when Conte was here, I mean I would if I was behind Emerson fucking Royal
I thought the same thing.

If he had attitude issues they probably developed when Conte told the whole world he didn't want him and then he spent the next 2 years being passed around Europe.

I don't think most people would be happy if they were in a similar situation.

It's not a complete myth- that's just your opinion. I and others contested your version of events many times.

I'm sure he appreciated being publicly referred to as a 'club signing'. Maybe Conte was right about other things, but he was a complete dick in doing that.

Eh? You can't contest facts mate. Spence played when both Porro and Udogie were fit. Like... it literally happened 🤷‍♂️

The only injury that affected Spence's rise through the ranks was the groin injury he himself sustained during the year.

It's all there in my timeline mate.

You're funny.

At best we can agree to disagree. Or you can simply go on telling everyone else you've got the uncontested, Absolute Truth.

How have we been sitting on one of the best fullbacks in the Prem and nobody knew it? What a star this guy is. If he keeps his attitude right he has all the attributes to go right to the very top. Should at the very least be on Tuchel's radar for the left back position.

I don’t want to fan the flames of this “attitude problems” agenda, but didnt Spence delete all his Tottenham references on IG and Twitter when we sent him out on one of the loans under conte?

I guess you can put it down to attitude or immuturity, but I’d like to think it was emotional and demonstrating his passion to be successful. Maybe he also thought conte was a bit of a dick (which was and is, factually correct)

nearly.

could have fallen thru the crack & sent out on loan gain -if ange had less injuries.

he is on 50K per week till 2027. much lower than Werner.

The right-back joined the club from Middlesbrough for a reported £20m, but made just six appearances for the club in his first two seasons, spending time on loan at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa.
£12m + performance bonuses that could rise to 20m. If he keeps playing as he is then I guess we will be paying the balance, but hopefully some of those are related to winning the ballon d’or and the like

You can contest it but he’s right.

Spence was getting integrated from pre-season.

There was 2, max 3 games after he came back from injury where he could’ve played earlier but he was already the first defensive sub to start the season
He was used as a last resort or afterthought consistently.

I laid out my case already previously. I doubt either of you even bothered to read it.

Suffice it to say I disagree with you both.
