Dier and Romero will be first choice.Good summary from a rare sensible sports reporter:
There has to be a word for Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez here after a vastly maligned centre-back pairing produced such a composed and assured display. It would be a stretch to say they were untroubled, but they weren’t at full stretch either. Both looked more comfortable in a team not set up to pile immense pressure onto the central defenders’ every contribution and they actually complemented each other quite wonderfully, with Sanchez winning four tackles and Dier making two interceptions. Both made a stack of clearances to go with it and it’s hard to think of a moment when either was notably out of position.
Cristian Romero will displace one or other of the pair before long and Joe Rodon’s development surely won’t be delayed too long but on this evidence Spurs might have four centre-backs capable of doing a perfectly decent job under an actual coach.
Footballers. What words do you use for players who are better than excellent?
Think Tomiyasu might be a dead duck - with Tanganga and Doherty as right backs there are more important slots to fill - for the right price >20m maybe we still add him, but anything more than that probably makes him a luxury we don't need.Dier and Romero will be first choice.
IMO Sanchez and Rodon go and are replaced by Tomiyasu and an experienced CB, hopefully EPL experienced.
Not hanging noone out for dry but Eric is a boy. We need a Ramos or ChielliniIIRC, Eric made a couple of Toby-esque long passes out of defence - I was impressed with him today. Amazing what a bit of self belief does for a player/team.
Dier loves playing against City. He, Toby and Hugo were our best players in the cup final last season. Some of the passing was dodgy but he didnt make any big mistake today and made some decent clearances. So far not too bad. His partner Sanchez was brilliant, had to deal with a lot of one on ones and did really well with them.
Too generous with that 8 out of 10, more like 2 out of 10, but at least yesterday he didnt mess up like that weird thing he did vs chelsea last year.Dier loves playing against City. He, Toby and Hugo were our best players in the cup final last season.
He is prone to brainfarts but 8 times out of 10 when it is a big game coming up Dier shows up prepared to walk into a gladiatorial pit.
Ouch !Cristian Romero will displace one or other of the pair before long and Joe Rodon’s development surely won’t be delayed too long but on this evidence Spurs might have four centre-backs capable of doing a perfectly decent job under an actual coach.
You can say a lot of things about Dier. But he loves this club.
There was a England friendly against Spain were Herrera elbowed Dier in the face. After the game an interviewer asked Dier if he wanted Herrera to apologise and Dier just responded with "He doesn't need to. I'll see him soon".Hes a real fighter. On the pitch, in the stands, everywhere.
