Why?

Not being a dick for a change, but he doesn’t score, doesn’t assist and we’ve got loads of players like that.

Am I looking at the Modric argument that he offers so much more than just the numbers?

When you watch him play it is clear what he does and that he does create chances, the fact that he is not the last player to play a pass to the goal scorer does not mean his earlier passes weren't what actually created the chance.

Plus for most of last season when he played he was forced to play so deep because nobody else could move the ball through the midfield that he was not in position to be able to score/assist. Anytime he has been played in a role that he is close to Son and Kane those 3 have worked well together to create chances. He is by far the best player in terms of working with those two and at worst our second best passer on the team, a guy that can beat the press through dribbling or passing and someone who can make passes in tight areas, make passes that beat defenders and make passes to put teammates in dangerous areas.

We absolutely need him back, although Jose likely wastes him on the bench anyways so it likely doesn't matter.

5 goals and 1 assist in 18 games. By the minute I guess those stats are much better
He is "involved" in a lot of other goals and provides loads of chances.
The more chances we have the better chance of scoring.
Who else is providing chances?

Nobody really. But he doesn’t seem to be either. One assist in 18 games. As I said, I think it’s 3 in 40 league games. And 1 goal in that time too.

He could be an answer to having depth in the squad, but I’ve not seen much to suggest he’s the answer to our problems.

I know it's very Woolwich - but he regularly "assists to the assister".

The Modric. I like to call it.

He is obviously talented. But injured a lot. And I’m not sure he’s what we need to improve the side right now.

He definitely is as we need as much ball movement, especially through midfield, as we can get.

I know that Jose hates that idea and GLC, unfortunately for him, will likely increase our possession stats, but we need players that can make passes, beat defenders and do something to create offense other than lump to Kane and Son and hope they can go 2 on 4 and score.

Yup, thought that would be it. Did mention the Modric thing earlier myself.

Does give us another problem though. Who does he assist to provide the assist?

Ndombele?
Kane?
Son?

Of course, it'd be lovely if he popped up with more assists. His assist to Son against Liverpool was lovely (he then got injured the following game and not seen since)

I think now we have Ndombele and Hojbjerg as the midfield 2 - GLC could finally play as #10.

What I like about having GLC in our team is that when he gets the ball, his first instinct is to move the ball forward. Unlike 3/4s of the our attacking options.

GLC
Hojbjerg - Ndombele
Can't help but feel that is a brilliant midfield 3.

All do their fair shift defensively, all look to play forward and all offer something different. Kane and Son in front of them and another wide forward capable of scoring and assisting would really raise our chances.

He can pass the ball forward with some quality and is not a wimp, that immediately elevates him miles above Winks and Sissoko. We had Lucas playing in the number 10 position against City, the ball bouncing off him from all angles so often that he was hooked at half time.

Gio has a lot to prove but he has quality. That is what the team needs more than anything else. The more quality on the pitch, the more likely you win the game.

Let’s hope you are both right chaps.
