You are describing a target man, there are different ways to play the position - different players have different attributes of course.

Son is a forward for sure, not a classic no 9 granted but I would say he qualifies as a striker. Whether we also need someone who will bring the qualities you describe here is a fair question.

I don't think you'll ever get the best out of son with him playing with his back to goal it's not his game. There can be certain rare occasions where it can pay to play him as a striker but overall I think week in week out he doesn't have the correct attributes to play it consistently well. You want him last night a couple of yards off the back line receiving the ball facing the goal with the time to get his shots off.

A true striker that can play the position can produce against any kind of system and find ways. It's a specialist position. Son is great but he's most definitely not an out and out striker. He would do better playing close to or off of a proper striker no doubt but he's not that main guy there imo.

If you think Aguero & Zlatan were essentially the same players..... Or Firmino & Dzeko; then it's obvious where the problem lies.

thats largely down to the front 3. that front 3 is a poor fit against a side happy to camp in their 18 yard box. easy game doing that especially when you dont have anyone in the box whos going to attack crosses.

get richarlison in the box and flood the box with crosses...something is going to give. not rocket science. we havent got messi and iniesta who are going to twinkle their way through 6 players in close quarters.

Quite the turn around. 12 months ago half of you on TFC were saying he was finished.

One of the biggest reasons I was fine with selling Kane is because Son and Richarlison were being wasted playing out wide.

He’s not the dynamic winger he once was but his movement is still great in the final third and he’s never going to stop being a brilliant finisher.

Also the deep blocks thing is overplayed, a top winger would open up space for him.

completely different game with richy starting over son today. thats how damaging he is starting at 9. hes a CB's dream to play against. dont have to worry about the air, dont have to worry about him sticking it on you, know you can take the ball off him if you show a bit of aggression. what are you worrying about? and you know if you stick it on him before letting him get it fully under control (which could take a while) and stay relataively close to him youre going to walk all over him.

sell to the saudis for 60+ so they can have another washed up poster boy.
