Player James Maddison

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

That would be terrible tournament preparation starting players you have already dropped from the squad.

It would also be insanely unfair to already dropped players being given an audition for a role that's already been taken.

Not that I hope he's injured, but that would be the only conclusion I could accept if he was genuinely going to start on Friday.

Hasn't it been quite well known that Southgate is a bit of a twat that loves playing favorites?

Not saying that Madders deserved to go to the Euros. But there's been quite a few times that Southgate has clearly favores "his boys" over players that are clearly performing better.
I also don't believe he deserved to go based on his club form, but that doesn't mean he didn't deserve a fair audition in these friendly games before the tournament.

Had he started Friday, scored and got 2 assists, man of the match, he would have played himself into the squad, and that's the chance any player there deserves.

Thing is for Maddison, this isn’t the first time Gary’s mugged him off.

Even when he’s been in form and playing well, he’ll get left on the bench

He's probably furious and gutted he's not made the squad, given his age the next world cup is probably his last chance and even then it'll more than likely be as a squad player even if he did get in.

Given he wasn't a favourite of Southgate it was always going to be difficult for him to get selected this time round especially since he was awful for most of the season.

Don't blame Maddison for being pissed off, but let's be honest Southgate has never liked him. Southgate picked Kelvin Phillips for England squads despite sitting on Man City's bench for a whole season, Harry Maguire has been useless but still gets picked, Jordan Henderson and Luke Shaw who hasn't kicked a football since Feb is in the squad.

Maddison actually did have a little bit of impetus in his game i.e always looking to play forward but I guess that doesn't suit Southgate ball.

Feels personal for Southgate. Maddison has a bit of mischief and rascal to his character. Usually in a good way but Southgate is a square and he likes other squares.

It's also why we always struggle when someone needs to have the character to do something a bit special and outside the square.

I seem to remember an international break whilst Maddison was the form player in the whole league and he got an hour out of position on the left wing.

This should be the last squad Southgate picks if it's any consolation to him.

Should be, but knowing the FA Southgate will probably be given a 5 year contract after we get knocked out in the quarter final!

It is, Southgate has a history of not wanting players who have abit of personality about them.

I'm all for players like Wharton but you know full well if he came on he'd be told to pass sideways and not venture past the halfway line.

It's why we struggle when we need goals, we play too many safe options. At least Maddison the other night tried to pass the ball forward.

Also a point to remember is that regardless of Maddison's form or if it's the correct or incorrect decision to leave him out of the squad one thing that is certain is that Southgate and his team are absolutely awful in the man management part of the game.

Southgate (and his staff) have got their favourites and that's that, everyone else needs to sit quietly and keep their fingers crossed that they get picked all the while accepting backhanded jibes thrown their way.

They tried to disrespect Ben White the same way but he straight away got up and told them to get fucked and don't bother calling him again and this was 100% the correct way to deal with disrespectful amateurs like Southgate and Steve Holland.

Perhaps all the players were informed and Maddison just took it very badly and told Southgate to do one and fucked off? He appears to be quite a highly strung bloke, there’s a high chance that’s what happened IMO. Coupled with the cringy removing England from his bio.

It’s deserved though if we’re being totally honest. He’s been crap for us since the turn of the year and there are far better options available in the squad.
If he told Southgate to do one and fucked off I’d vote for him as player of the season next year.
