Manager Jose Mourinho

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I know that today's game has somewhat of an asterisk to it with the red card. But based off of our current run of form (1 loss in 14 games or something like that) and how united the team looks. I get the feeling that our players have drunk way more of the Jose Kool-Aid than the United lot ever did. Our players buy what he is selling and are listening.
Even in the 2nd place season, that was mostly De Gea just standing on his head (saved 14 more goals than would otherwise be expected). That wasn't a good Jose Mourinho team like 2014/15 Chelsea was.

2014/15 Chelsea: 69 xG (3rd), 32 xGA (1st)
2017/18 United: 59 xG (6th), 44 xGA (5th)

With United's performances that season, you'd have expected them to finish 6th with 59-62 points rather than 2nd with 81.

People assumed it was Mourinho's fault that it all came crashing down, and it was to an extent, but he's got a real good chance to prove everyone wrong this season.

And I think that Jose is legitimately motivated to prove people wrong. Which I think will make it so that he doesn't throw his toys out of the pram at the earliest sign of trouble (and he already weathered a massive storm last season). he'll want to make this work. Prove that he's till got it and keep his won a trophy minimum with each club he has managed streak alive.

This week (Newcastle, Chelsea, Maccabi, United) has certainly help assuage a lot of doubts I had with Jose, and I think the largest weakness in the squad (CB) will be an interesting challenge for him. I don't think our CBs are bad, but relying on them to keep clean sheets every week will cause us to drop a lot of points. We need to approach every match like we need at least 2 goals.

17 clean sheets in the league that season.

This on SpursWeb :
The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare and The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick have both confirmed in their recent pieces on Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer window that Jose Mourinho is pleased with the business the club have managed to do.
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now shed more light on how the Spurs boss influenced the club’s recruitment this summer.
He revealed that Tottenham’s targets this year were shaped by regular reports from Mourinho during the previous season on where the club needed to strengthen.
It is claimed that the club prioritised deals for a different profile of player than they have gone for in the past during Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.
Gold reveals that Mourinho wanted to bring in players with strong character and leadership traits. The Spurs boss reportedly wanted loud voices in the dressing room to add to those of Lloris and Kane, allowing them to deliver his message on the pitch.

The report suggests that the club, in the end, ended up getting almost all of their first-choice targets apart from Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar.

Spurs Web Opinion

Pochettino often talked about the importance of having “nice human beings” in the squad and one certainly gets the feeling that the club went for non-confrontational players during the Argentine’s reign in order to keep the squad harmonious. However, that seems to have changed under Jose, with the club seemingly targeting vocal players this summer, which is not surprising considering that the Portuguese coach does not seem to mind confrontations among his players.

Looks like Jose has been doing his homework.

looking back at that season where he got them to 2nd. It was truly pretty remarkable with that back line and that midfield. Especially considering the number of clean sheets. No doubt, De Gea had some amazing games during that season to keep them in the games but just managing through that season with the personnel that he had and injuries from prior season as well that he had to deal with is pretty amazing. No one was gonna get close to City that season but being second with the gap in points to City was used as a stick to beat José with by their fans on redcafe. Most of the criticism was that he should have been challenging for the title that season, that he never came even close, that he had the squad to do that and more, etc. To some of their fans, even winning the league wouldn’t have satisfied them because of how they played. Not the United way.

In the PL he's had one major implosion (Manure)
and one complete meltdown (Chavs #2)

Manure was caused through a falling out with the board - they didn't buy the players he wanted, partly because some of the ones he'd bought weren't playing well enough to be picked. He also wanted to get rid of some awkward sods who weren't pulling their weight like Pogba and Shaw (yes?). He's been proved right on those in the meantime. He also wasn't living at home. Hotel? Terrible for long term.

With Chavs, he fell out with the board - Emenalo the DoF refused to buy the players he wanted and bought a whole lot of others instead. They'd had a ridiculous pre-season and arrived back after a US tour knackered. Then there was his hissy with the female fizzio. Everything went wrong and he'd no experience of digging a team out of trouble. I think he had a bit of breakdown.

So -

if he lives at home and has a settled family life
he and the board don't row
we buy the players he wants
shift the ones who become awkward sods

no reason why this can't be a bit more long term than the others

To be fair, Mourinho had a really great run at the start of his second season. He got 20 points from a possible 24 from the start. Winning 6 and drawing 2 of his first 8.

It's a shame that the Everton and Newcastle results dented us, but what are we on now... 7 points from 12?
Our league run after the international break (before we hit a tough streak of fixtures) is:

West Ham (H)
Burnley (A)
Brighton (H)
West Brom (A)

Win all four and that's 19 points from 24.
