Manager Jose Mourinho

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I’ll never warm to him because when I see him, I see the success of Chelsea’s financial doping. He’s Chelsea just like George Graham is Woolwich. I just want him to win the trophies for us and go personally. You can’t blame any dye-in-the-wool Tottenham Hotspur fan for having this stance. There’s no love in this thing, it’s strictly an arranged marriage. We get to win, he gets to restore his reputation that’s been damaged.

I’ll cut his image out of the parade pictures and tell my Grandkids That Harry Kane was the player-manager.
I'm pretty "dyed-in-the-wool", and have no qualms in recognizing Jose's achievements, IF he is the manager that leads us to success. It's pretty churlish not to appreciate and give credit where credit's due, IMO.

three different views of it's implication.

I have a soft spot for them too, because of the colours, the city and because Torino and Fiorentina supporters have a brotherhood relationship. I went once there for the weekend and for our game against them. We were wearing colours all the time and people were continuously stopping us on the street to chat with us, amazing

Yes, the 90s was a good decade for Italian football... a lot of talents, so many sides doing well in Europe. Even Torino managed to get to the UEFA final. Back then the final had two legs. We must have been the only side to lose a final without losing any game 😆 (2-2 at home and 0-0 away with Ajax)
When Spurs played there a few years back I had the same experience, their fans (and others in the city) were extremely friendly.

The police though, not so much.

I just don't understand why some people find it so difficult in life to simply put their hands up in the air and say "Sorry I was wrong". Not just with Jose but on lots of other threads in here. We all have strong views and opinions about this club and the people in it, but when one of them is clearly proven to be misguided or incorrect then a little humility earns a lot more respect from others than stubbornly trying to stick to your guns.
I understand your point is broader than this, but as it’s in this thread, why would anyone say “sorry I was wrong” about Jose yet? We’re 4 league games into the season.

When anti Jose fans were on his back last year everyone said we needed time to assess his value, with an upturn in form there’s no time needed now, he’s the one for us!

Jose will be judged at the end of the season. There’s still a lot he needs to convince me of to prove my preconceptions wrong (albeit I hope they are). 7 points from 4 games isn’t close to doing it.

I always had a soft spot for Fiorentina, simply because of their purple kit.
Back in the 90s, when Channel 4 used to show live Serie A games, I think I knew more about the Italian game than the domestic league. It was definitely the place to be for most of the top players at the time.
I always felt incredibly jealous of James Richardson presenting Football Italia on Saturday mornings.

He was eating a nice bowl of pasta washed down with a glass of red whist I was slopping down some Cheerios.

Haven't we only lost once in 15?

Maybe I’m not quite sure, But regardless it’s still a pretty small sample size.

Utd had an incredible run at the end of last season but I don’t think it makes Ole the right choice as manager for them.

We’ve has a good start and good performances (outside of Everton), but crowning Jose a success now is no less reactionary than crowning him a failure during the injury hit section of last season.

Let’s see how it all plays out over a much longer period. I genuinely hope I’m wrong and will hold my hands up if that time comes, but claiming some moral victory right now is premature.

I was always jealous of the fact he could interview the likes of Maldini, Baresi, Baggio, Zoff, Mancini, Battitsuta, so many others I could go on, all night:)

Quite right. My choice of thread was perhaps inappropriate to make my point about apologising when wrong. I wouldn't expect anyone originally unconvinced by José's appointment to be handing out slices of humble pie just yet. I would perhaps suggest that you put the oven on to warm up though.

The anti-Jose brigade are basing it on the ill-feelings they had towards him before he joined that they can't let go of. Just imagine it was another manager they didn't have any prior bias towards, who:
  • If you start the table from when he joined, would have got us 4th last year despite no pre-season.
  • Took the team from 14th to 6th despite the worst injury run I can remember, literally losing most of our attack and best players (and us not even having a backup striker).
  • Is regarded as one of football's most successful ever managers, winning trophies at every club, and being known for instilling the winning mentality and edge we clearly need.
  • Helped raise the profile of the club immediately which helps in many ways, not least of all the transfer window, which he was clearly involved with (I really don't believe we'd had done the same business with many others mangers in charge).
  • Saved what would have been an incredibly dull documentary, and has had a whole host of entertaining/classic moments even outside of that (he really is box office and endlessly watchable). I still laugh every time I watch this
  • Always speaks extremely respectfully of the club and fans, and has clearly fully embraced Spurs. It's also clear that he's regarded extremely highly by players, and many have spoken about wanting to work with him. It was never a question any of our stars leaving this summer and I think he's a factor in that.
  • Actually makes changes early on when things aren't going right, and actually says what he thinks in press conferences.
  • Currently only 1 loss in the last 15 which was to Everton who are the only team to have won every match this season (after phenomenal transfer business).
  • Literally just pulled off an incredible week, rotated the squad perfectly, and has got us scoring plenty of goals now that he actually has a fit squad.
  • Despite the nonsense that 'Kane will hate it under Mourinho', Kane's just had the best start to a season I can remember. He even seems to have got Ndombele firing.
  • Just got us our biggest win at Old Trafford, totally humiliating United in the process.
I could go on but my point is NOT that "you have to declare him a huge success right now!", obviously we don't yet know how it'll all work out... But even if he hadn't done all the above in less than 12 months, surely the default starting position should be supporting/backing the manager in his first full season? With some here it feels like guilty until proven innocent. I'm not saying people can't question him or have doubts on whether he's right for us long-term, but anyone who adamantly wants him gone right now (so we can go and start a new project with an unproven up and comer presumably?) is crazy to me.

Really there are only 2 arguments against him:

"The football is shite" / he's a dinosaur, not relevant etc - Clearly relevant as wins trophies everywhere and achieves more than most even in his "failures". As for the football, was mostly poor last season but still ground out results; given the injury crisis most people would praise that if it were a different manager, especially when you consider the away record before he took over. As for this season, too soon to judge the quality of football, but surely you have to admit the last couple of weeks are promising and be open to giving it a chance. Plenty of goals so far, some really nice play, and aside from individual mistakes generally an improved defence. We easily have one of the best attacks in the league that should largely take care of itself, so a coach renowned for improving defences might be more what we need anyway.

"Look what happens at the other clubs he's been at" - You mean win multiple trophies then fall out with the management over lack of signings? Is that really such a disaster? We haven't won a trophy in 12 years, if he wins one here (which I believe he will, and I think the players believe he will too), he can have a bust up with every employee at the club for all I care. Besides, don't fans want a manager who is going to push the management to invest in the team, isn't that what we've all been saying? The reality is I think both Levy and Mourinho know what they've got themselves in for, and I think we have less divas than Utd and that it could work out ... but even if it does fall apart, Levy runs the club smartly, and I really don't see how it's going to be the giant disaster some people are imagining. I think we should spend less time worrying about every possible thing that could go wrong and enjoy what's going right at the moment. It could be a very special season. (Essay complete, hope I passed).

Great job. Summed it up really well and to the point. Don’t see how anyone can’t read that and see the light:)

Nailed it mate. 10/10 for the essay. Good grasp of the subject matter and superb analysis and anticipated outcome. Gold 🌟
