Luka Vuskovic discusses Tottenham future, what he must work on and possible Westerlo loan return

Future Tottenham defender Luka Vuskovic has made a real name for himself in Belgium ahead of linking up with Ange Postecoglou's side in 2025

The 17-year-old, who is now playing alongside future Tottenham teammate Alfie Devine for Westerlo, has earned rave reviews in Belgium this season and certainly given Spurs fans a glimpse of what is to come. As well as showing his defensive capabilities, the Croat has also demonstrated that he is a very useful weapon in the opposition box after scoring seven goals in 25 league games in 2024/25.

His latest goal came on Saturday as Westerlo lost 3-1 at home to Charleroi. Again, it was another header from Vuskovic as he converted Dogucan Haspolat's corner to give Westerlo the lead.

Due to turn 18 years of age on Monday and with his Tottenham move edging ever closer, Vuskovic was asked about his Spurs transfer, gaining experience and also about the possibility of returning to Westerlo next season if he isn't to be part of Ange Postecoglou's plans initially.

“I had barely played ten games for Hajduk. In the meantime, I have already gained some experience,” he said on his Tottenham transfer, as reported by Voetbalkrant.

“Without being arrogant, I can say that I have shown sufficient qualities. Maybe I still have to work on my speed a bit more, although Mats Hummels shows that you can make a difference even without that speed.
“If I have made my debut at Tottenham, it will be fine. Is there a chance that I will stay at Westerlo? That has not been discussed yet.”

Gallas wasn't slow either though, and at times was used as FB. Thing is, all those CBs you mentioned (one could include Terry and Vidic as well) played under head-coaches who knew how to use their strengths. Spurs most probably play the most high-pressure system ever seen in the EPL (even with 8 outfield players like vs Chelski) that is not compromised under no circumstances, which requires lots of pace for a CB to efficient. Angelos does seem to have learned how to adjust his high-presure tactics recently, though...
I do not believe our current head coach will be head coach in the time frame I think Luka will be looking at first team soccer. As for Gallas wasn't slow wasn't rapid either...so exactly where I believe the kid will land .

The guy himself saying he’s not very fast. Worrying.

Not sure why this is much of an issue - and he was pretty general about it. Putting aside the strong possibility that Ange is off in the next 6 months, I'd rather have a solid presence in the heart of defence with a knack for goals, e.g. Toby and Verts, neither of whom were pace merchants and complemented each other well.

Also only turned 18 today so plenty of time to adapt.

Happy birthday, Luka and welcome to THFC!
We had another Luka from Croatia at Spurs a few years back.
Dunno what happened to him but he was great for us.

Pundit claims Luka Vuskovic should continue in Belgium

Patrick Goots, who represented KRC Genk and Royal Antwerp during his playing career, claims that the freshly-turned 18-year-old is not ready to play for his parent club just yet.

Goots stated that a loan to Royal Antwerp may be the ideal next step for the Croat, suggesting that he could replace former Tottenham hero, Toby Alderweireld, at the club.

The pundit told Gazet van Antwerpen (as relayed by Voetbal Krant): “Vuskovic is very all round, only the pure pace he lacks a bit, and there is a good head. He will also realise it is too early for a return [move] to Tottenham.

“I think he’s in any case a very interesting profile for Antwerp, where Toby Alderweireld and Zeno Van den Bosch will disappear from the heart of the defence after this season. Competing for prizes, and who knows, maybe playing European, would be an ideal intermediate step.”
