Van Dijk is one of the best because of his performances in last year, not because of his price tag.

Ffs you ever watch Liverpool?

Nothing to do with his price tag....or the Liverpool shirt......or the media tug job.

Yet he'll be 28 in a few months, and prior to him joining Liverpool not a single person on the planet called him world class. Which is why he only has 25 international caps and couldnt even get a game for a shite Holland team until he was 24. Interesting.
Couldnt just be an average player having his best season in his late twenty's then could it.....no, all of a sudden he's Paulo Maldini, and always has been.

Yes, yes.....Im very sure if he went to Everton for 22M, you'd all still think he was better than Jan and Toby, and indeed the best CB in world football

So he can't be world class if he become that at 28 years old.

He's not Maldini. He's playing great football and he's not average player. I can't even.. It's obvious fucking thing. Shouldn't argue about that.

You don’t become world class at 28 mate....it’s one good season in a career.

If he’s shit next year, did he stop being world class again

VVD is a good player and has shown to be a solid defender this season but a lot of his hype is media driven.

A bit like how Wilshere was the saviour of Englands midfield for years upon years despite never impressing.

Liverpool conceded 42 goals two season ago. 38 goals last season.

18 this season, fewest in the league. Yeah, media hype.

and Southampton conceded 48 goals two seasons ago when VVD was there?

If anything, a change in system and having a competent goalkeeper in Allison is just as much the reason why Liverpools defensive output has improved, not just VVD.

He's a good defender. Not blessed with finesse or calmness but he's a strong player who wins a lot of his headers. Don't think he's on the level of Alderweireld or Vertonghen (at their best) but the media have gone on like he's one of the best defenders of all time.

He's a decent centre half with decent positional sense, but has been massively over hyped...the BBC were saying he's the best Dutch player that's ever played in this country. Reality is he's arguably not too 10, and not even the best Dutch centre half.

That's nonsense by BBC. He's one of the best in present time, along with Toby and Jan. Can't see any defender that's good as them in other PL teams.

Basically, he's Ron Vlaar with pace.

Yes. It is nonsense by the BBC. And he is a good centre half. But it's prime example of howthe media has hyped him up, and let's face it, he's no Rio Ferdinand, no Jaap stam, and frankly, no John Terry( much as I hate to praise that detestable cunt)

Edit:whilst sammyspurs sammyspurs has gone ott in his own inimitable way, he's right about 1 thing: this is the first season in his career that he's looked to be any more than decent.we shouldn't be calling him world-class until he's done it for s couple of years at least. And then he'll be 30 and past his peak

I hate to say it, but VVD is playing at a high level. I still have a hard time calling him (or any defender playing right now, honestly) "world class", but he's among the best the past couple of seasons. I looked at the numbers to try and show it weren't true...but the results contradicted that.

The brief of a defence is to prevent shots, and to harrass opponents to make the shots that are taken of poor quality. Liverpool is aided by the second lowest minutes played in their own half (19.8 behind City's 21.6 and compared to our 24.3), but in those minutes they give up 0.4 shots/min (0.36 City, 0.5 Spurs). The biggest difference is that Liverpool give up 0.13 SoG/min (0.14 City, 0.17 Spurs), thus only 32% of their already low shots faced are on goal (38.2% City, 35% Spurs).

All that to say what we already know, City and Liverpool and playing in a different league to the rest right now. And Spurs look thoroughly average statistically. Still...we're gonna smash the cunts, I feel. Squad should be well up for this, I believe.

To circle back on topic, Poch has some work to do to live up to his defencive reputation which is faltering a bit lately.
