They must have lost more on other players in the past and they're hardly skint (if I correctly understand your post about potential reasons why they kept him). He's just functional and puts himself about... a bit.

He scuffs every shot. Seriously. The goal against Chelsea only went in because he scuffed it over the keeper, and he scuffed a shot well wide a few minutes beforehand.
