I live in Newcastle and don't think their fans are always as passionate as they make out. There's a bit of context to this in my opinion. For a start it's a one-club city so there's the Leeds scenario where there's noone else to divide the support.
Re the recent games at the Lane, away fans usually try and outsing the home fans in any football match as they're outnumbered so overcompensate. Also TV studios often turn up the volume on the pitchside mics next to away fans.
Where were all their fans when they went down to the first division in 2009 or the 90s? Just look at the attendances. A Fairs Cup (UEFA) in the 60's and a few FA Cups is the extent of their success too. I see blokes with Geordie accents wearing City, Woolwich and Chelsea shirts here walking around town or at 5-aside games, anecdotal but whatever.

I love the Geordies, they're friendly and lively people (my fairer half is one) but not when it comes to football.

Cheers....not sure I would fault their attendances for 2009 though..

Good find. I guess St James' capacity is 52,000 (which is like a Roman Colosseum in the Championship) and the article said their attendances were regularly 40,000 that season so even being 10,000 less than capacity is still a very good number, relatively compared to the size of grounds of clubs like us. So I spose I was comparing them to what they usually got. I do remember when they played clubs like Plymouth and there were visibly a lot of empty seats-which is anecdotal I know. I'd be interested if the figures in the article were counting actual 'bodies' in the ground or if any of them were just tickets sold giving margin for season ticket holders who didn't turn up etc. I know the Chronicle wouldn't be partisan in the slightest :pochsmirk:. Nah again good find though mate.

I sit right up the other end and it seems that all away supporters are really loud, even when that area is not full - is it the acoustics?

I think that is why there has always been, and always will be, segregation at football matches. It would be great if home and away fans could all sit together but get in the real world mate
Hang on, it's not like there was 50 spurs fans sitting with the away support, was me, my wife and two neutrals. Cheered our goal, didn't exactly goad anyone.

i thought they were pretty quiet first half, only burst into life after their first goal, and i was in block 32, and didn't think that the atmosphere was too bad today, us and people closest to us on the shelf were singing

I was in Block 36 today, right near to the visitors section and my god the noise from the Newcastle fans was deafening, for most of the first half and the entirety of the second half. I expect they had been on the piss since 6am, but even so their support was quite incredible today.

How I wish our home support was only 50% as good as theirs.

50% like a Geordie??.....GTFO with that bullshit...
you want to wear scoop neck tee's, be 120 pounds just so you have abs, stupid fucking haircut and attend a solarium 3 times a week do it on your own time mate..

I'm sure there must be a reason for it, but I can't think why you'd sit in the away end at WHL with two neutrals?? Seemed to be a scattering of empty seats around the ground, there seemed to be most of a row in front of me in 35 but could've been a few season ticket holders who weren't bothered.

I normally consider the Geordie support as highly overrated but thought they were class on Sunday. Probably the best at WHL this season.
Given how their home "support" is not really "support" these days I was very impressed. I guess most of those away fans exaggerate their behaviour to make up for home games.

alijamieson alijamieson - Just interested, are you from the UK?

Watching an away game in the home end is one thing. But watching a home game in the away end another! Also, how did you get the tickets? It might be a myth but I thought all away tickets went to Geordies with several decades of Most Loyal Supporters In The World Loyalty Points.

Hi, yes I am from the UK, been a Spurs fan since I was 5 or 6. Never sat in the away end before.

My friends were guests of Gabriel Obertan, and they go to most Newcastle away games in London.
