"In May, 1967 Tottenham defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. The same month Glasgow Celtic defeated Inter Milan in the Final of the European Cup in Lisbon to become the first British team to win the trophy. This high profile pre-season Challenge Match at Hampden Park to mark the Centenary of Queen’s Park Football Club attracted 91,708 spectators and was played on this day, 5th August, 1967. Both teams were at full strength represented by the players who had lifted the trophies the previous season."
The highlights can be found on youtube, I saw them a year or so ago.
It was a 3-3 draw. Spurs went ahead twice, Celtic's 3 goals were all pretty soft, Big Pat must have had the mother of all hangovers because all 3 were down to him, the last a real clanger.
Celtic in their peak years under Jock Stein, winning 8 League titles in a row or something like that. They'd just won the European Cup in Lisbon against Anti-football Catenaccio Inter Milan, so for once the good guys won. Also got to the final in 1970 and really should have won that too. Beat Leeds on the way, termed "the battle of Britain". In that semi 2nd leg, that was played at Hampden too as Celtic Park not capable of holding the vast crowd they thought would show up (they were right - 137,000 at Hampden). Scottish crowds were amazing in those days. This one had 91,000 for a friendly!
A good Spurs team was coming to the end of its time - the years '68, '69, 70 were average to say the least. Greaves was sold towards the end and Peters joined, which heralded a very good team 1970-72.
Back to '67: we were about to play MUFC in the Charity Shield, that too ended 3-3, Jennings having a better day and scoring from a massive kick out of hand.
