Bentancu's stats :

Season so far - 5 goals and 2 assists in 21 games (or 7 goal involvements).

(By comparison, 2nd half of last season - 4 assists in 17 games)

I really like CM's who can chip in with goals and assists - Bentancur is on track to get to 14 goal involvements (goals and assists) this season, which is a decent contribution.

Add in Hojbjerg's broadly similar stats (4 goals and 4 assists in 21 matches), putting him on course for 16 goal involvements for the season ............ and between the two of them that's 30 goal involvements a season from our most regular CM's.

Those sort of stats are usually achieved by a very good forward.(Kane's currently on 13 goals and 3 assists in 22 matches - so on track for 32 goal involvements a year)

So our CM's really are pretty productive, despite none of them being 'creative' midfielders !

Both have been out best performing players this season.

Not bad for two players who regularly get 'overrun' eh?

This is something I've been moaning about for years at Spurs. PEH especially as he constantly ended up in prime goal scoring positions and fluffed it. Same goes for our defenders.

Conte probably deserves a bit of credit for this.

Difficult to know precisely what's made the change - but imo its at least partly now that we have a good solid Central midfield (whichever of the 4 plays) it means at least one of them can go forward into good attacking positions, safe in the knowledge that one CM who is fairly solid in defence remains in position in case possession is lost further up the pitch.

And that knowledge means the CM who has gone forward can relax and focus on making himself felt with goal attempts and assists, some of which will come off as we've seen.

But whatever the reason(s), and there maybe more than one, its a welcome development to get a central midfield contributing a significant number of goals and assists every season.

Can't be bothered to check but have most of his goal involvements come when we have played a 3 in midfield? Would make sense.

Either way they come when we have nothing to lose and play with a bit more adventure.

Conte really needs to spend these next 6 weeks figuring out how to harness that from minute 1 while stopping us leaking goals.

Leicester goal was an open play goal from 3-4-3 formation. Sporting and Bournemouth goals were from corner kicks, both in 3-4-3 at that time but not relevant. Both goals vs Leeds were from 3-5-2. I think he probably does have more open play goal attempts in 3-5-2 though.

weve definitely seemed to have better control of the game with the 3 in midfield. which is pretty logical as you have an extra man in the most important part of the pitch.

it hides how poor we are at the back too, which is why weve looked better with the 3. the 2 just cant do enough to mask the defences deficiencies .

Do we?

We played 3-5-2 against Utd and looked complete shite.

yea i think weve looked better on the whole this year when its been 3 in the middle. take emerson out of RWB and have kulu playing and things can be different, might not need the extra man there then if you can get the ball to stick up top which is what kulu can do.
