Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Should we follow West ham's transfer policy then? Ever wondered why they sign players early? it's because they are shit and no one else wants them.
I remember everyone saying exactly the same last season and how they were going to catch us.. Just for the record they finished 10th ( 19 pt behind us) got knocked out the FA cup by Wimbledon and the league cup by our reserves.
Do we really want to use them as a model for how we should behave??
I thought the sarcasm was clear, never mind.

West Ham is not a good model and they do not have a good plan in place for targets. That said, they finished 19 points behind us last year compared to 35 the year before and 10th compared to 13th. Liverpool went from finishing 2 points behind us to 26 in front. Spending money on our squad is necessary at this point

I've no doubt in my mind that discussions with Ndombele have taken place and we have some form of agreement with him. It's all about reaching agreement with Lyon.

The issue now that will potentially arise is that there is so much noise of us haggling over the fee that a United or Real will sit up and go 'hey, this Ndombele chap is actually quite good, maybe he could be of some use to us', and swoop in, meet the asking price right away and have the whole thing wrapped up within a day.

My heart says we surely won't let this happen again, my head says in inevitably will...

That profit margin was greatly helped by the low spending on transfers and salaries.

Low spending on transfers and wages yet we still achieved top 4 and got to a final with a squad that secured us record profits based on European prize money.

I suppose the point I was making is that people are irate about what we are doing transfer wise but it would have more justification if we weren't surpassing our targets league wise being the 6th biggest club etc

£100m for jumping from 13th to 10th?? yeah, that proves spending money is what it's all about..

We definitely need to strengthen the squad but it has to be for the right player not just anyone because buying players means success because it doesn't.

Everyone wants a League Cup, as long as it doesn't come at the expense of:
  • Champions League (playing or qualifying for)
  • Premier League (winning or top 4)
  • FA Cup
  • Europa League (to qualify for CL)
  • Literally anything else related to Spurs
Yeah, the prize money for winning the League Cup is £100K, the prize money for getting a draw in a game in the CL group stage is £800K!!!!

West Ham has a terrible transfer strategy as I said but id spend 100 to pick up 16 points on our rivals next year while getting two pieces who's value has gone up. I'm not for spending just to spend either and don't want us to buy some of the targets we've been linked to, but we do have two targets who are young and would improve our team a ton next year that are going to cost a lot of money and we need to pull the trigger

We had more losses in the league this year than the last two seasons combined and we barely scraped into the top four, we are regressing, there is absolutely no doubt about it.

We have a squad that is also getting older as well and will soon need some of its main components replacing (Verts, Toby for example.)

I admire your optimism mate and whilst I think Levy is very good at making money you only have to look at some of his past decisions from the footballing side of things to know that he isn't the best in that regard.

I don't even think he knew Poch would turn out to be as good as he is, I think it is crucial that we buy but Levy seems stuck in the past in regards to fees and transfers, it's his weak spot, that's why we worked better under a DOF imo.

More losses but also more wins and only a couple of draws.

That with a squad decimated by injuries as we had 10 of our players in last 4 of WC morning they arrived back from their 3 week hold after WC to start season without the pre season which is designed to condition players for the sesson. See Park Lane Mark Twain Park Lane Mark Twain excellent analysis of missed games by the majority of our squad in one of the latest posts on the thread.

Only 2 years ago that we had one of he youngest squads, and even now we only have about ,3 or 4 players over 30 so it's not crisis time, although as I have said it makes sense to get in some reinforcements.

I would say I am taking a pragmatic assessment of Spurs financial capabilities - based upon the stuff I post in the Finances thread - and the fact that I've the last 18 years Levy has steadily improved Spurs whether we talk squad orstadium/facilities sometimes taking half a step back to go a full step forward.

I would agree a DoF makes sense but my understanding is Poch is not keen hence the transfer committee of he, Levy , Hitches (chief scout) and McDermott ( head of academy).Different to Liverpool where Klopp is not directly involved in transfers just coaching/management.

I also want to add, I think some people find it hard to criticise Levy because they feel like doing so is an insult to the club in general because of him building the stadium and of how far we have come under ENIC.

I would say it's a mistake to view things like that, dangerous actually because Levy and ENIC are not Tottenham Hotspur FC, we have to challenge them so they don't become complacent.
Good post. Some are very quick to criticise the players or managers but if anyone dares to criticise levy/enic they get really moody & angry. Definately think some prefer levy to the players or poch.

It is but we can't compete when other clubs get involved, that's why it's important that when we first bid for a player we make the offer irresitable to the club, agent and the player, I feel like our approach is about waiting to see if we can get a deal rather than trying to secure the target before other clubs get involved.

Nobody goes in with their highest bid - unless they really do not have the ability to raise it.

Buying players is more difficult that home buying ( more parties involved - player, agent, clubs) but in most lhome purchases the house is given a price and people bid starting at 15% or so below that - unless it's made clear that it's "offers over £x' and it's then a quasi auction to see who bids highest.

Almost guarantee if Spurs bid £ X million the selling club will try to get another club to bid more, providing there is time. That is why Levy's favourite trick used to wait until a week or two before TW closed before bidding - gives selling club little time to react. This time we seem to have made our interest very clear in Ndombele and lo Celso very clear from the start of TW - major change by Spurs
