That is very defensive, 3 mids with creative ability with only 2 attackers.
We won't switch to 442 much this season.

Well, ideally you'd have Perisic and Spence as our attacking wing backs.
But our best performances last season came when playing that 352.
It's more of a 424.
Which has been one of Conte's favourite formations in the past. The one that changed the game against Chelsea. And one that I would ideally like us to play against teams we are expected to dominate.
They're all good players, few would dispute that. But with Romero (and Lenglet) out of the side our buildup is just not near the required level. Those back three see so much of the ball, and so far this season they've been nowhere near good enough with it.
Would love to see Kulu central.
But for that to work, we'd ideally need Spence to play RWB and Perisic to play LWB otherwise we'd be far too narrow having Emerson playing there. Our build up play would be far too slow because of how narrow we'd be and it wouldn't work.
its not so much about keeping clean sheets. the defenders have to be good on the ball. city have players back there who can play, you think city play anything like the football they do if they had the 3 we had today? the moves dont even get going because the pass out from defence is not good enough. romero is fine, lenglet is fine, the rest are not up to standard for modern football.
dont mind conceding every game if we are actually playing good football, with the forwards we have we will outscore most teams, we cant play good football because the passing out from deep is fucking shit, the moves are a struggle to even get going when you got donkeys trying to play out. even their passes sideaays to each other are slow and inaccurate, so easy to defend against.

I think Emerson is more of an issue though when it comes to playing it out from the back with that back three. Davies is actually fine most of the time. Most of our best attacks today against West Ham pretty much all came from our left hand side where we built it up well.
Sanchez and Emerson are far too uncomfortable in possession that it's either rather predictable to know what they're going to do or the central midfielder has to limit his game because of it.
Said it numerous times. Defensively, we're no worse off when Romero is out. But as a footballing side, we're a lot worse. We miss Romero's passing out from the back more than we miss his defensive ability.
Spot on. And sadly Bissouma's passing was also awful today.
Hojbjerg works hard and is reliable, but always tries ambitious chip through balls which float out of play.
You are assuming a level of tactical flexibility that we have very very rarely seen from Conte.
We started with a 3 in midfield against Liverpool when we barely had any players. Despite looking decent we never used it again.
We went 424 in a desperate attempt to get back into the game against a Chelsea team completely dominating us. Do you really think Conte would ever start a game that way? If we did we would have no good attacking options to bring on if things weren't working (which goes back to my point about not having enough cover). He also said we don't know how to defend in this shape.
The reality is we will 99% of the time play some system where we have 3/4 attackers starting (be that in a front 3 or a 2 with Kane/Kulu deeper) and 1 decent cover option from the bench. Not enough.
unless romero has been playing the passing out from the back 3 is fucking awful. dier and davies are just out of their depth at this level. even the passing sideways, if its slow and not accurate then all it does is let the opposition shift over and cover all our forward players. so fucking easy to defend against.

This is the Conte way, and it has been relatively successful let's not forget.
But this transfer window was the chance to give Conte's strategy a real chance of success.
Instead we're 8th in the league in terms of net spend. Way behind our rivals.
We needed a LCB with better passing ability, a RWB who can create, and another attacking bench option other than Rich.
Conte may walk at the end of next season sadly, we've spurned this opportunity for no reason.
I still don't think we have seen our first XI anywhere near what it will look like at its strongest this season yet.

4 of those missing tonight, I think the dynamic changes once this lot are integrated and know what the crack is. Its also still very much up for debate if Doherty is ahead of Royal but still not fit enough to start.
It's a good start results wise. 8 points up on last season compared to the same fixtures we played then. 1 more minimum in required tomorrow though I feel.

Lenglet, Spence and agreed
Spence didn't show great end product at Forest, altho he was good at dribbling. Lenglet is great at passing but has been poor defensively for Barca, not sure he can be trusted.
He's got to play them otherwise there was no point signing them

We played it against Leicester in the 3-2 win.
The reason we stopped was because we brought in Kulusevski and he basically forced his way into the line up and the rest is history.
I don't because I think he's stubborn with the 343.
But Conte's Juventus played 424 as did his Italy sides. So it's not out of the question if he feels he has the personnel for it. I just think he has a few players he trusts on match day which rules out the playing of certain formations from the start. Davies, Dier and Romero being three of which, who play centre back.
It's not out of the norm to have 2 decent options off the bench. Richarlison and Lucas are two decent attacking options late in games, Richarlison more so of course. Most of the top clubs in the league usually have about 2 at most on the bench. Who did City have on the bench besides de Bruyne today? Mahrez really, that's it.
Liverpool? All they had was a promising youngster who had a good year in the Championship in Fabio Carvalho, who actually did end up coming on and getting the win. But besides him? No one. With Nunez starting, would have likely had Firmino too on the bench, but that's still thin.
But we have the personnel available to switch our formation up and move players around. That's on Conte whether or not he wants to do that or not. But we've got the players to do it.
That's not me saying I am happy with our squad overall. You can always improve. And I'd love for us to sign Malinovskyi or someone of that ilk tomorrow who is happy to come in and sit on the bench and when given a chance, do something for us.
lenglet is protected in this system though, he cant be much worse as a defender than dier and davies surely, and in terms of on the ball quality hes in a different stratosphere, so surely he would of improved us a lot tonight.
