The evolution of a culture takes time and people will not change their opinions overnight. Much of the African, Caribbean and Islamic world is intolerant of homosexuality.

We can continue to shut them out, or we can invite them in and see if they embrace acceptance over time.

Take WWE wrestling for instance. For many years they have been holding events in Saudi Arabia. In the beginning females were banned from performing, fast forward 4 years and not only are females performing but this year they had the longest match on the card.

Trying to force people to change their views never ever works, and usually evokes more divisiveness. For instance; Black Lives Matter / Say No To Racism has further divided race relations, not brought them together.
desegregation didn’t occur through all of the US by slow, gradual acceptance. Change was forced on them and there are countless other examples of cultures requiring a sudden and forced change whether everyone wants to accept them or not. There are still plenty of people who disagree with interracial marriage. At some point you need to not worry about the people who want to live in the dark ages.

Like Saudi, Qatar has a long-term economic plan to open to tourism and diversify their economy. This isn't a 5 year plan, it's a 20 year plan. Its probable that some of these middle eastern states will become entertainment hubs; hosting the biggest concerts, best restaurants and luxury travel.

Alcohol and Drugs is a huge problem in western society, destroying many lives. I fully understand any developing country wanting to restrict abuse. How many of you wish you had never touched the stuff but are now addicted?
And how many lives has religion destroyed? Yet they still utilize sharia law. That is purely about control, not protection of its citizens and that is frankly entirely silly to try and justify.

News to me.,...There are still schools in USA that are 'all black' (Vegas for instance). There are plenty of black only neighbourhoods. Segregation still going on; enforced by economic policy and old school attitudes that believe all blacks are criminals.

120 since the civil war years still hasn't been long enough.

Whenever someone uses the argument of "let's see if they can change over time", I always bring it back to South Africa.
Why did the world not accept their apartheid regime, and included them to see if they changed over time?

You still haven't answered this btw.

Do you think it was wrong for South Africa to be excluded due to them having apartheid ?

After all the black people who lived there could of moved to different countries right, or is it only LGBT+ people that should move ?

They bought the tournament, you're argument was somewhat understood for Russia (and to a lesser extent South Africa) its the fact they have these values that go against the stated values of Fifa with little or no sporting or social political reason that justify the 'cost' is the reason. In the context of a football tournament there is every reason to be angry.

Fifa statute article 3.
3 Non-discrimination and stance against racism
Discrimination of any kind against a Country, private person or group of
people on account of race, skin colour, ethnic, national or social origin, gender,
language, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, wealth, birth or any
other status, sexual orientation or any other reason is strictly prohibited and
punishable by suspension or expulsion.

More like « if » you were a professional footballer then you would go to a country with such primitive values. Not a single footballer has turned down a place because it’s in Qatar.

Very easy to grandstand from your c

This morning, my wife told me that Mr Deschamps agrees that you have to respect the culture of the host country. Presumably the French Football Federation specified that?

I just watched the video posted here on Twitter.

It occurred to me that sometimes it would be wiser to just shut up than to make "politically correct statements" that you can argue about as being politically correct at all!

That's a spectacularly awful take on this topic. Congratulations.

Heard it was a reason for years, raising profile increases his safety. Fact Putin stayed friends with him could indicate it worked.

Regardless it appears to be one of the goals for Qatar buying the WC.
It was Abramovich that handpicked Putin, and allegedly formed Putin's first Cabinet.

Yeltsin was looking for someone that would allow him to retire in peace without launching corruption investigations, and Abramovich recommended the little-known Putin as someone with a strong track record of aiding, abetting, or overlooking corruption.

I heard the same on a podcast recently but Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Helping him achieve power and being an ally doesn't mean he didn't also realise a need to raise his international profile to help secure safety.

Without having deep knowledge I am sure a lot of these guys were supporters of Putin at various points and thought they were safe.
