Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur at St. James' Park on Wednesday 12th February (KO 19:45) in the 26th Round of matches of the 2013-14 Premier League.

Newcastle come into the match in 8th place in the Table on 37 points with Spurs in 5th place on 47 points. This will be the 152nd time the two clubs have met.

The first meeting came in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in February 1905 with Newcastle drawing 1-1 at White Hart Lane before winning the replay at St James' Park 4-0. To date, the clubs have met 9 times in the FA Cup.

The clubs met for the first time in the Football League in November 1909 in the First Division with Newcastle winning 1-0 at St James' Park and completing the 'double' over Spurs with a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane in March 1910.

Tottenham's first win over Newcastle came in a First Division match at White Hart Lane in November 1912 with Jimmy Cantrell scoring the only goal of the match.

There were further meetings in the First Division up to season 1933-34 with honours generally pretty even.

An FA Cup 4th round match in January 1935 was won 2-0 by Spurs at White Hart Lane with George Hunt (Spurs' record goalscorer until Bobby Smith) scoring both goals.

The next 12 meetings between the clubs came in the Second Division of the Football League either side of World War Two from 1935-36 to 1947-48. These dozen matches were the only League games contested between Spurs and Newcastle outside the Top Flight of English Football.

The 1950-51 season saw Spurs win their first Football League Championship and in the process they did the 'double' over Newcastle winning 7-0 at home and 1-0 away. The 70,336 spectators at White Hart Lane for that emphatic 7-0 win were the largest crowd at any Spurs v Newcastle fixture in history.

Spurs beat Newcastle United in the 1952 Charity Shield 2-1 at White Hart Lane with Les Bennett and Peter 'Spud' Murphy scoring the goals which won the silverware.

The first Football League Cup meeting came in the Semi-Finals in January 1976 with John Pratt scoring the winning goal at White Hart Lane in the first leg but Newcastle winning 3-1 at St James' Park despite a Don McAllister goal to advance to the Wembley Final.

Newcastle United, along with West Ham United, were the first clubs to be promoted to the Premier League for the 1993-94 season and Spurs won the first match against Newcastle in the competition 1-0 away at St James' Park with a Teddy Sheringham goal. The Magpies had their revenge at White Hart Lane in December with a 2-1 win.

An FA Cup Semi-Final at Old Trafford in April 1999 was won 2-0 by Newcastle after extra time.

Newcastle lost their Premier League status at the end of the 2008-09 season but won promotion at the first attempt managed by former Spurs player and assistant manager Chris Hughton. Hughton was sacked under contraversial circumstances in December 2010 and Alan Pardew was appointed as Newcastle's new manager.

The fixture at St. James' Park last in October 2011 resulted in a 2-2 draw. Rafael van der Vaart opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 40 minutes. Demba Ba pulled Newcastle level three minutes into the second half but Jermain Defoe's 68th minute goal looked like securing all three points. Substitute Shola Ameobi scored a late equaliser for Newcastle. The reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in February 2012 resulted in a comprehensive 5-0 win for Spurs with goals from Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Louis Saha (2), Niko Kranjcar and Emmanuel Adebayor.

The opening match of the 2012-13 season at St James' Park resulted in a 2-1 win for Newcastle. Demba Ba put United ahead after 54 minutes with Jermain Defoe equalising for Spurs after 76 minutes. Ben Arfa was fouled by Aaron Lennon and he scored from the penalty spot for the winner on 80 minutes.

Spurs won their home League game in February 2013 2-1 with two goals from Gareth Bale, the first coming after 5 minutes from a free-kick and the second after 78 minutes. Yoan Gouffran had levelled things for Newcastle mid-way through the first half.

Newcastle United won the Premier League game in November 2013 at White Hart Lane 1-0 with Loic Remy's 13th minute goal proving to be the match winner. Tim Krul made a string of outstanding saves to keep Tottenham from scoring.

Tottenham Hotspur have won 63 of the 151 matches played so far with Newcastle United winning 56 and the remaining 32 games drawn.

Some big boys in Newcastle's midfield, yet another game where a ball-winner centrally is absolutely vital. I'm hoping though that with the additional days of training and some match fitness under his belt, Townsend will be played out wide and Eriksen will start in the middle, dropping Dembele back and hence Bentaleb back to the bench.

Needless to say that we need the 3 points. And we also need to start a holding midfielder.

Otherwise, Newcastle's recent form has been awful and we should take advantage of this. Starting the match strongly would be a welcome change from our last performances.

Still can't believe we lost to them at home.. we absolutely battered them 2nd half.. No way can Krul have as good a game as he did last time..
They are on a downer at the moment, good time to be playing them.

Lucky to be playing Newcastle now. Cabaye gone, Tiote and Coloccini injured and Remy suspended with Gouffran and Cisse major doubts for the game.

Cue a hat-trick from Shola Ameobi and a brace from De Jong on his full home debut.

In all seriousness as long as Krul doesn't have another worldie and Ben Arfa doesn't have his 1 in 20 exceptional games we should be good. Sissoko is the main threat as he's now playing further forward.

Newcastle is a psychologically deflated outfit that's just had their keystone abruptly knocked out. Despite our poor recent form against them, we've no excuse not to come out of there with the bundle of points, regardless of whatever central midfield Sherwood tosses out there.

It's on my birthday. Bang on to lose late.

No Remy, Tiote, Debuchy, and Coloccini for sure. Gouffron and Cisse have been out but might return according to physio room. So basically it's a good time to play them.

They played Anita, Sissoko, Ben Arfa and Santon in midfield against Chelsea. I think any combination we put out there should be able to handle them as long as we don't have an absolute mare.

Lol at me saying "big boys in their midfield." Forgot they played Anita there Saturday.

Not even recent, we always seem to struggle there. Also if we play Dembele and Paulinho as a midfield two, or Bentaleb in there, I still expect us to be about as convincing as we were today and last week at Hull.

The CM problem isn't really anything new, as we've had very few games this campaign in which our midfield dominated possession. Too much lethargy and nerves. With the quality we have at the position, we should be expecting far better.

It always seems like they do have some huge guys in there. They are just in such trouble currently with injuries and suspensions. They are so thin currently they played Santon and Anita in the pivot against Chelsea. Now Debuchy is hurt so presumably Santon will return to fullback. Plus, their center back pairing of Taylor and Williamson is hardly inspiring.

I really am not too concerned about what lineup we put out there. I think any good performance we turn in will get us a result regardless of our poor record at St. James. Newcastle are really there for the taking.

I hope you're right man. I hope our midfielders use it as an opportunity to mold some cohesiveness then.

Not to sound too Sherwoody but sometimes you are just better than the opponent and have to go out and win your individual battles. Newcastle are down Cabaye, Tiote and are playing fullback in their place. Sometimes you just have to go out there and outclass your opponent like you're expected to. Every single one of our CMs would get into Newcastle's midfield in its current state.

We need to keep the momentum going after the win against the Toffees, if we have any real ambition to be top 4, these are the games we should be winning easily. But then again, that's not exactly Spursey, is it?

While I agree with this, both Paulinho and Dembele should start over any of Everton's current healthy options in midfield, and they were still dominated today. No matter what any gulf in quality looks like at the time, I will always hesitate to look favorably upon a trip to St James'.

Without a more balanced midfield I'm not expecting better particularly, than what we're seeing.
