By design or happenstance?Poch's team from 15-17 was good enough.
we just didn't get over the line. the squad we had over those 2 seasons was absolutely good enough.

In football silverware is everything
No one gives about anything else
Really??
Great post. I am getting frustrated with Conte but this is a nice piece of perspective. Also share your position on ENIC- I see bad and good.I’m not an ENIC apologist. All that fiasco with the managers; not backing Poch; not getting the right players in; it was making a lot of us angry. But the stadium is now built and ENIC have started coughing up funds, got in a proper recruiter and they’re backing Conte. Plus, I’ve read they’re committing a further £174m.
What we need to do is give Conte some time so he can properly shape this team as he’d like. At present, it’s clearly not a title contending team and Conte has not been reluctant to point that out. Like others have said, we’re playing bench warmers in the first 11, plus we have Kulu, Richy, Romero and Pierre out injured. That’s a big hit.
Success in football is a lot about hard cash of course but also a fair amount of alchemy. Nobody really knows which players are going to work out; how effective they’ll be as a collective. You can have some terrific players who don’t gel for whatever reason. It only takes one player to have a bad game for things to turn; that’s how narrow the margins are at the top end in this sport. But just hammering through different managers is not going to help. You need a proven manager with a plan and give them time to mould things their way, as painful as the process can be to watch. Liverpool had to watch us bosh them 4 - 1 before Klopp began working his magic.
If we were fighting relegation then I’d be of a different mindset, but at present I can only see Conte as our best bet to sort things out and ENIC thus far seem to be of the same mindset.
January window coming up (let’s not forget we had one of our best ever last year) then the summer. Get those defenders and wingers Conte wants and then see what happens.
Newcastle have, in their favour, no European football to navigate around.Well it’s hard to say. Any of Us, Woolwich, United, Liverpool, chelsea & even Newcastle could finish in the top 4. I think city win the title.
So 3 places left for 6 teams. I don’t think Newcastle are ready quite yet for 4th but it wouldn’t surprise me. I feel it’s like last year where are hopes lie on others around us blowing it. Obviously we need to pick up points too & cash in again. As it stands, I am not confident of us taking 1 of those 3 spots left.
I disagree. The approach from 14-18 is exactly what is needed on a budget. The press is the great equalizer. We are not going to be able to do it the same way at City, Chelsea, United, etc. We are not going to be able to win anything attempting to emulate them but on a budget.Yes, they caught lightning in a bottle with Poch the first time. Which is why we should never go back to him, the odds of repeating that are miniscule. It will end in tears guaranteed.
How many semis and finals have we been in during those 21 years?1 League cup in 21 years
Why is it so difficult to understand?
How many semis and finals have we been in during those 21 years?
Never understood the logic with this line of thinking. ENIC get credit for getting to semi finals/finals but then after that it’s the managers responsibility?(who by the way they employed) Surely they just haven’t built a good enough side/squad to get over the line. Even if you think in a handful of those games we had the better team then they haven’t been able to build a winning mentality or culture within the club. The number of those semi/final defeats spread over many managers can’t be a coincidence. They are the one constant. If I had to guess I reckon the player incentive bonus’ will be for CL qualification rather than winning trophies. How many semis and finals have we been in during those 21 years?

If you’re going to blame ENIC for a Redknapp side featuring Bale and Modric losing to relegated Pompey then this thread has lost all sense of proportion.Surely they just haven’t built a good enough side/squad to get over the line
Worse than I thought!

CAREFUL!!!!Great post. I am getting frustrated with Conte but this is a nice piece of perspective. Also share your position on ENIC- I see bad and good.
Why? Semi finals/finals are tougher both technically and mentally. They’ve been spread over many managers/players, yes in those games there are individual moments where managers/players don’t do well enough and in that sense it’s collective. But when the next group of managers and players fail and the next, you have to start attributing the majority of the responsibility to the constant. It’s not lazy it’s just how any business would look at it. They are either not employing/buying the right people or they are not implementing a mentality at the club. It's actually a collective fault - the board/managers/players.
ENIC's job is to build the infrastructure for the team to push on to become successful, you can argue whilst they've mis-stepped along the way we've had more than enough opportunities to win more than 1 trophy, 13/14 semi's tells you that we've been good enough to get to the latter rounds of competitions and if that's the case we should have been good enough to pick up a few pots along the way.
Saying that they are solely at fault is just lazy and passing the buck, I will admit that they have had a history of prioritising other things (like top 4) than trophies in the past but let's not act like it's all on them, like I said we've scored a grand total of 0 goals in the last 4 finals we've participated in and look at the kind of players we've had at our disposal.
