Quite.....

There's a lot of rent-free-ism with regards to the outside perception of England and their fans too thanks to:

- 80s rep for hooliganism.
- Media hype (which is of course their job; to drum up enthusiasm, create column inches and sell papers) being projected as fan sentiment.
- The likes of Scotland & Wales giving us constant stick only to get antsy when we laugh back at them when they fall on their arse.
- ...And yes; at one point (before the internet well and truly kicked in) we were quite ignorant to the game across the rest of the world.

.....But also; there's little-to-no intent to factor in the cynicism, sarcasm and gallows humour that is commonly present in English sentiments and sense of humor....... For every person that at some point says "It's coming home" after a few pints; a large % aren't actually believing that.

Also; as we have to point out during every tournament that song itself is one of self-depreciation and resignation to having been a bit shit for decades.

......Something the Germans completely overlooked when they adopted that song a number of tournaments ago. Maybe they are the arrogant ones?

TBH; for all the reams of text that the topic has drummed up on here (between relatively few posters); it's fucking boring.
That makes sense until you travel. Other countries who are at least as good almost never have the same over the top fervour. There is something different about the English approach to their national team.

For what it’s worth, at a club level this same energy is applauded. English clubs have incredible support.

Or c) he's clueless and deluded and actually believes that he's am elite manager.

I think he's read too many bios about managers who stuck to their guns and were proved right.

You'd think he'd know that he's sacked unless we win it so he'd want to at least have a go.

He had the perfect chance last match in a relatively risky free game, but he only made one (bad obviously) change from the match before.
I remember in the first tournament him saying successful international teams play dull football . It's almost as if it's by design

There you go then............. Why should it be interpreted any different just cos it's international football instead of the club game?

"Scar-bor-ough..........Scarborough Athletic FC....... We're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen"..........

Of course a ludicrous sentiment. It's English humour.......

Yet; we stand accused of lacking self awareness when it's the exact opposite and conversely it's those criticising that are lacking the awareness to interpret what they're critiquing correctly....... As such, I couldn't give a toss how we compare to other countries.

Italians are pretentious and self-absorbed as fuck over their national team..... They have that "means more to us" attitude that Dippers, Newcastle & Barca carry..... Their ultras stab tourists..... Why not get on their case for being "different"?

....Like I said; rent free.

I’m confused - do you expect stereotypes to be an accurate reflection of the entire group?

It seems like you’re learning why stereotypes are wrong or harmful -‘they imbue the whole group with the characteristics of a subset of the group.

Eg. Black people are criminals is a stereotype. It’s true of SOME of the group but it’s not true of every member of the group. That’s why the stereotype is harmful or wrong.

Also, the stereotype many people in Europe have of England fans isn’t based on Deuterz. Almost no one knows who he is. He just fits the profile.

I like to think people tend to mature after a while and not base their thought process about a group of people around a lazy stereotype.

You've been on this site long enough to be able cast judgement on an entirely group of people based on your own experiences, this thread is literally a living example that tells you that your claims are just a load of BS.

Unless you actually really think that the vast majority of England fans are delusional or the typical English fan is a hooligan then if you do, that's totally on you and I'd implore you to do some more learning about people...because this is the exact thing you'd say when it comes to people stereotyping Muslims.

It's people that hold onto the stereotypes who have the problem, not the loud minority who tend to fit into a category which confirms a bias.

I think he was clearly purposely going over the top and just countering all the negativity. Depends on if you're generally a glass half empty or half full person. England have been shit 3 games in, but you could also look at it as an unbeaten side with the least chances conceded in the tournament so far and one that could well be in a Quarter final by Monday without even playing well. I would imagine England will raise their game considerably when they play a team that they actually feel threatened by, a team that won't just play with a low block all game.
shit in the games prior too. When both your results and performances are shit, there is only outcome

Gargoylegate is far luckier than club managers and prior England managers as he has alterantives on the bench, yet after about a year of dire dross he still isn’t reacting. Ugly, dour cunt

On this I agree. But I never said I thought that the stereotype was true of all England fans. I simply pointed out that the stereotype existed. Does it hurt to know that’s what many people abroad think of England fans?

My view is that I think this delusion is prominent, just as views supporting brexit were prominent. But that doesn’t mean that every or even most England fans are like this.

I do think that there’s a remarkably un. self-critical approach and many other big footballing nations tend to be more critical of themselves. But there are all sorts of fans out there.

How come there's no stereotype for french fans, almost a non-entity. French German Dutch Spanish Portuguese all have a type but other than standard French arrogance nothing
On the whole we don’t really care about our team until they prove themselves to us. So far they haven’t shown anything worth loving so fuck them.

French arrogance doesn’t apply to french football fans - it’s just a stereotype of french people. Even then, it should just be Parisians. RicharliSon RicharliSon is unlikely to say that people in Lille are particularly arrogant.

Parisians are but you’re all just jealous ;)

Trophy free too but as you were.

Just you then 😉

They are arrogant cun...

Nah, ever since I've been here all the French people I've got to know have been top class. Don't know if it varies region to region or not, but Lille is very much home now.

Your posting over the last few weeks has very much portrayed someone that buys into the stereotype (regardless of any token "I know not everyone is like that" caveat you feel obliged to toss in)......

Perhaps it's just part of your bi-annual dance with with Deuterz Deuterz (?), but it is pretty tedious to sit through from the sidelines.

My view is that I think this delusion is prominent, just as views supporting brexit were prominent. But that doesn’t mean that every or even most England fans are like this.

Well there you go then..... You DO buy into and choose to further propogate said stereotypes.

This place is an ideal microcosm of English fans; yet you choose to ignore the fact that the majority of England fans here DON'T fit the sterotype you choose to embrace.

I do think that there’s a remarkably un. self-critical approach and many other big footballing nations tend to be more critical of themselves. But there are all sorts of fans out there.

Pardon me for being frank; but I think this is made-up bollocks.

Irrelevant.

Scarborough have won jack shit of note EVER.... But you still selectively applaud their tongue in cheek tribalism.
I never applauded Scarborough’s tongue in cheek tribalism. I made a sweeping statement about English football fans generally - and it was positive.

The issue is the tendency to believe that football is eleven individuals and if your players have a higher fifa rating than you’ll beat the opposition.

But don’t worry, I disagree with most of the stuff people write on here about spurs too. I don’t expect people to suddenly become clear-eyed when viewing their national team.

I know you understand my point and I know you're avoiding it.

I can't be fucked further dueling post after post with you over this; but rather hypocritically, your position here is evidently selective and driven by your own tribalism.

The issue is the tendency to believe that football is eleven individuals and if your players have a higher fifa rating than you’ll beat the opposition.

Meh.... That's a disingenuous summary of the breadth of all that you've been peddling with regard to England/English fans since before the tournament kicked off.

......But you are of course and don't have tribalism-tinted specs on when peddling stereotypes about the English.

Seems Konsa is about to start over Trippier tomorrow as the latter isn't 100%. Another negative move. Gomez has played pretty well at left-back for Liverpool last season on the odd occasion he played there and at least gets forward. Konsa won't cross the halfway line.

Could play him at left back, TAA at right back and operate like Liverpool do in and out of possession. It’s suited to international football and I said it a month ago. It’s staring southtwat in the face.

God forbid, an England football supporter, on the football forum of an English football club getting a bit over-excited about the prospects of the England national football team in the run up to a tournament.

Fucking hell

And the thing is Deuterz at leasts gives logical points and explanations, he may not be right all the time but he's not saying anything outlandish, if he thinks England have a genuine chance of winning the tournament then so what? If he thinks that England have some of the best players in the world then so what? He's right based on the talent pool we have at our disposal.

Have this every time tournaments come on, opposing fans who don't like England go fishing for opinions which fit their confirmation bias about England supporters then everyone else gets blamed and a nation gets tarred all because of a loud minority...The funny thing is that out of all the forums I've been on this is probably one of the most negative towards the NT.

Just want Southgate out now, and give Carsley a go unless we could convince someone like Klopp which is a long shot. I know there's a big difference between under 21 and senior football. But there's isn't a chance Southgate could have done what Carsley has done with our under 21 team, and in the same style.
