Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Nah.

I saw him through Levy around 2004.

Conte is a winner.

He could never have worked with Levy's bullshit.

Hence Nuno for a handful of games first.

Conte was never the problem. He wouldn't compromise and he wouldn't allow Levy to compromise what he wanted.

Can't believe how far some will still go to defend the miser tbh.

Even now.

Still obsessed...

Seriously its hillarous how its taken this long for so many to see what's infront of them. If nothing else it fully supports a total purge of the back room from a coaching side of the club. We wasted nearly 18 months of improving a top 5 percentile players development because not sure what the excuse is now...plaits blackness Islam time keeping .

He should be BETTER than he is if we hadn't flexed like a working mens club in Wombwell as opposed to an elite EPL side. Id buy a leftback (Antione Robinson) ASAP and get on with turning Spence into our best RB since Walker prime. He is NOT there but he can be and that's bloodly rare. Look at Kerkez and Ait Nori he cooks both of them.
Wish he’d go back to that swashbuckling RB when he first got into the team. He has a good level of skill and can cruise past people. However lately he seems content to keep it simple and safe. He defo has the ability to get down that wing taking people on.

That was very much Conte though, freezing him out and sending him to Rennes. Ange totally responsible for doing him over until he had no choice though.

Though TBF, Spence went to Leeds in the championship and didn't do great, and Genoa turned down the option to buy him for like £8m.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to suggest that we didn't have "this" Spence at the club for the first 2 years. Sounds like he had a bit of a mental aspect to sort out
Did he do well in preseason under Ange only then to be told we would sell if Genoa paid up. He saved Ange’s skin v Coventry early September 24 then was binned.

Archie gray played RB ahead of him last season until soton game which I think was December?

Nope.

I made a comprehensive analysis of Spence's 24/35 season which you can read here (below) and then never again make an unevidenced claim again. You can thank me later 👍

This meme has got completely out of control. You have no idea what Ange thinks/thought about Spence. So let's try and address facts, eh?

We know Spence was on the verge of being flogged to Genoa last summer. We don't know what happened next but presumably he went to the manager and stated he wanted to try and break into the team. Postecoglou gave him one last chance - one that all of Spence's previous managers except Steve Cooper hadn't.

That is fact. All we know for certain is that Spence was about to flogged for a loss. but ended up staying.

So now he's bottom of the pile. He has to prove himself. Train hard, show willing and fight for his chance.

That chance came against Coventry on 18th September. Came on second half - out of position as LB - and was great. Took his chance. Now he's caught the eye but he's still got a lot to prove. Porro is clearly number 1 RB; Udogie clearly number 1 LB. So it's going to be hard.

He's on the bench for the 3-1 win over Brentford. Fair enough. Still got a long way to go to break into the PL team.

He then gets 45 minutes in the win against United. Replaces Udogie (who is not injured just rested) for the second half and again plays well out of position. He's now trusted by the manager to have PL minutes when we're in good position. And is now an option to rotate in game out of position LB/RB. He has the managers trust. This is going well. He's moving up the squad ladder.

Then its the Brighton game - he almost certainly would have made a sub appearance if we were in control but disaster strikes and we throw away a 0-2 lead. Postecoglou relies on his 1st teamers to get out of the mess they created. Mistake? Probably. Understandable - probably. Most managers don't turn to fringe players to get them out of a jam.

And what happens next? Spence gets a groin injury. He misses 3 games. Back on the bench as an unused sub for Ipswich. Comes on late in the City win to help see it out. This groin injury is a set back. This is what stalled his progress.

The next 3 games is where Postecoglou leaves him on the bench as we suffer a series of disappointing results. This is the one patch of the year where you can legitimately say Postecoglou made a mistake. But considering Spence started at the bottom of the pile he wasn't getting ahead of Porro and Udogie who were NOT INJURED and we desperately needed results and under pressure managers rely on what they know has worked for them. But, yes, feel free to have a crack at Postecoglou for this stretch of games.

But Djed keeps going. Doesn't drop his head. Finally gets his chance when he starts against Southampton. He's great.

And hasn't missed a game since EXCEPT for the Wolves game where he was suspended. The Wolves game was where Udogie did his hamstring. Spence couldn't have played because he was suspended.

And since then he's played every game hes been available for and has now proved himself beyond doubt.

Those are the facts. If you look at them and still want to continue this fantasy that Postecoglou never gave him a chance or never believed in him then I'd suggest you are exhibiting "cult like" behaviour.

In this shitty clusterfuck of a season the one good thing - one feel good story - has been Djed Spence turning his career around with the help of the manager who gave him a chance.

Oh - and the REAL MISTAKE Postecoglou made wasn't in not believing in Spence (he clearly did as shown above) it was NOT BELIEVING in Brandon Austin. If he did then Spence gets in the EL squad over Forster and the whole process outlined above would have been accelerated.

I have had a long talk with other England supporters, who follow a lot of other clubs but they all rate Spence...

I haven't heard such glowing feedback on a defender who can overlap, underlap, control the ball YET lock up the opposition while being able to deliver in the final third - We my have gold here!!!

I'm hearing more sukkin off for Djed than I have had for Kane (this aint a Kane thread & yeah anti Kane is a thing) from other club fans!!!

From a personal standpoint & his more 'modern' way of being a defender I want him to to go greater heights with us & England!!!

Archie Gray- future no 1 England RB. 2nd Backup - Djed Spence.

Thank God we have a real coach again. Archie looks all action as a CM 8, and Djed has won a starting spot in the England squad.

It's actually pretty ironic that Spence would have been a perfect in-cutting LB for Ange- but he couldn't really figure it out :/ Oh well- man has new challenges- Forest!

Remember when that Djed Spence interview came out with Rio & people, including pundits, Spurs fans & ex managers were slating him calling him a dickhead for wearing shades, arrogant & ghansta due to his accent & pretty much writing him off???

Yeah get fukked...you pearl clutching dinosaur dumb fukks who thought he was a 'detriment' to the club.

I really want him to be the best defender we ever fielded!

Did he do well in preseason under Ange only then to be told we would sell if Genoa paid up. He saved Ange’s skin v Coventry early September 24 then was binned.

Pretty much.

Ange was nothing at all like I thought he'd be. All of his approach to squad building at Celtic was so distinct to spurs, where I hoped he'd see past price tags and use some raw talent at the club.

The Spence arc was eerily similar to KWP, and only differed because of all the injuries. I still don't get why he completely ignore Reggie over using unorthodox options

Needs definitely to have elements of his game broken down and refined. He is a good player but he can be a great player if we get behind him and properly push and refine his weaknesses.

Let's come back to what was originally being debated here, rather than go off on that Levy tangent you seem to want to take everything down.

The question was whether Conte was a problem in relation to Spence's development. It's not rocket science. He refused to play a young man with, as we're seeing now, enormous potential.

You see Conte completely missing that or worse, completely ignoring it, as absolutely fine?

Bear in mind we are ONLY talking about Conte in relation to Spence here, nothing else.

We are in the Djed Spence thread after all, so maybe try to keep it on topic?

As I have stated several times now.

Conte was not the problem in relation to Djed Spence's Spurs career.

Conte was a winner.

He was polite about Spence, when Spence was signed by the miser, but publicly detached himself from the signing when he described Spence as a club signing.

Conte then chose to not select Spence for the first team.

The issue regarding Levy being referenced on the Djed Spence thread is that all roads lead back to the stupidity of his time in charge of managerial appointments and player transfers.

Levy has now been sacked for this stupidity.

Thankfully.

Hope that clears everything up for you and the chaps?

Spence is good at defending at left back, but going forward we really miss Udogie. Udogie combines better and overlaps the winger and we look a lot more threatening. Spence too often cuts back or inside stopping momentum

Agree- I think we saw Spence attack down the left maybe one time all game- right before the end of the first half. He's an impediment to a balanced attack on the left right now. Fine if we are playing counter ball or low block defense but if we are trying to score goals and win games in possession we need to be playing a natural left footed option there.
