interesting to compare two clubs, Manu v Seville... hasn't seemed to have impacted Manu, but I'm not sure if Seville went on in leaps and bounds?

Seems like the six (six!) European trophies Sevilla have added to their cabinet via the Europa League are a relevant piece of the equation.

Sevilla are level with Manchester United and Porto in all time European trophies. They have as many as Benfica, PSV Eindhoven and Borussia Dortmund COMBINED.

If we only ever had aspirations of Ropey league football then go for it. Savilla are a club that suits it. They may qualify for the champions league occasionally but they almost always go out at the group stages and go on to do well in the Ropey league.

If we want to qualify for the champions league, via league position, there are simply too many strenuous games and trips in the Ropey league to pull it off. Do you think Everton or West Ham would be bothering us this season if they'd played an extra 15 games across Europe?
The Spanish league is nowhere near as competitive as the Premier League so it's not really fair suggesting Sevilla manage to do well at home and in Europe.

If we have to play in it, in July, then scrap pre-season tours and friendlies. Including whatever stupid pretend cup we're supposed to be in.

If you want to win a trophy winning the Europa is likely easier than FA or even Carabao Cup.

I will always want to get into Europa League rather than not be in it. The teams at the top almost always are playing in Europe and still manage. The myth that the Europa League hurts your league form is still BS. United are cruising to 2nd despite going the furthest of any Europa League team, Woolwich are low in the league because they suck not because of Europa.

If you want to win a trophy winning the Europa is likely easier than FA or even Carabao Cup. City has won the last 4 Carabao Cups and as we saw this year puts up a strong team in the final. You will not face a team that good in the Europa League. The top 4 in the PL are likely stronger than the top 4 teams in Europa and are all in the FA and Carabao Cup. Europa League also brings with it direct entry into the top group in the CL group stage draw which is massive.

But more specific to our team I am really hoping we are going to have a ton of youth in the team next season that can benefit from playing in the Europa League. I also hope we have a manager that will trust them and not through Son and Kane on after 10 minutes if we aren't up 10-0 against LASK or Shrodiekflsadfajdskl FC. This could be a great time to give Skipp 90 minutes, see what Lavanier can handle at RB, Tanganga as CB, if Sess comes back see if he can handle LB. Lots of guys that could use playing time at a level lower than the PL and with less immediate stakes if they make an error or two.
Juventus and Liverpool could be in the Europa next year.

i always felt the the Europa league would be used in the early stages to keep the second 11 match fit leaving the first 11 for the EPL, but last year showed many of the second 11 were not even up to early games in the europa league

Its all relative. Im sure the spanish league isnt competitive to barca and real but to seville id say it is. A lot of clubs on the same level having to battle for the european spots

Instead of going on about Europa league ,why don’t we concentrate on the fa cup or league cup and take it one step at a time . Let’s face it we have probably a better chance of winning one of those than travelling all round Europe for months on end . We are not as big club as we like to make out .

Europa League should be a minimum requirement for a club of our stature. It can be tedious early on and getting knocked out feels like shit but winning it is worth its weight in gold a trophy and champs league spot. You play to win and finish as high as you can. If players have the mentality to not want to play in these tournaments because it isn't the top competition when they haven't earnt it. That's exactly what is wrong with their mentality

the trouble with finishing outside the euro leagues is only the first 11 (14/16 with subs) get weekly match time/fitness what are the rest of the squad doing ?
with only League/FA cup matches for second 11, that's only a match every few weeks
so do you reduce the first team squad to 18 players with the other places made up with kids (remember these kids are not going to get any real first team football so not getting any experiance)
or keep a bigger first team squad with maybe 8 of them only getting 2/4 matches for the season

This is it. Our squad is nowhere near deep enough to go far in the Ropey league and stay competitive in the PL.
