Lots to talk about on Ange, and he had a big part in this, but can we just recap some of the summer transfer narrative that we had on this site….
- Any notion than Son needed selling and replacing made you some sort of moron.
- Arguments than Johnson wasn’t good enough were met with the goals and assist police. I remember a large cohort of fans saying how much better than Luis Diaz he is based purely on stats. Laughable.
- Solanke was a game changer for us. How his pressing and goalscoring attributes (1 PL season) was the key to unlocking this side. I don’t want to dog Solanke too much because he hasn’t been terrible, but you only need to watch 5 games of his to realise he isn’t an elite player. He’s fine. Serviceable. Never a needle mover for us.
- Juxtapose that with Gyokeres, who was too big a risk because he was scoring in Portugal. We went for the prudent choice instead. What happened to “to dare is to do”. Surely we’d rather reach for the stars and fall short than settle for mediocrity?
- Archie Gray was going to be a huge upgrade on PEH. An 18 year old was going to be an upgrade on an experienced international who has been a leader for his country for years? I was not a fan of PEH, but we have missed his experience and energy particularly in tight games. I’m sure it was Richard Arlison (who by the way knows nothing about football from every single post I read of his) that said Gray would be playing for England by Xmas.
- Similarly, Gray was meant to provide robust cover at FB. He’s a very very very shit full back, doesn’t have the pace, doesn’t have the defensive nous, doesn’t have the man to man coverage. Spence must be watching him play there and scratching his head.
- Whilst there was broad agreement that the Werner signing was silly, when myself and others were calling for a proper signing at one of the wide forward positions, we got a lot of shit about how Odeberts stats showed he was perfect for us, and how the Werner signing, whilst not ideal, was astute in a way to not block Moore’s progression to the first team. It was so so obvious we needed a high quality wide forward, anyone (and I mean anyone) associated with the club that couldn’t see that needs sacking.
- As a fan base, we also used Chelsea as an illustration of dumb transfer policy and there were many claims of how much “smarter” we are than them. Now I’m not lauding their transfer strategy because quite frankly it’s both dumb and seemingly unsustainable, but what it does show is the importance of buying high quality players. They have plenty - even if some of their signings have been duds. We are as rich a club as them now. We should be focussing on how we get as many top players into key positions as possible. Moore and Lankshear will work their way through it’s they’re good enough!
None of this to exonerate Ange, but it does put into perspective how poor the summer window was and how much we’re paying for it now.
