I got a response from the club.

Basically, they said they can not permit the use of the drum any longer due to the rythm the previous drummer using encouraged the systematic chanting of 'Yids' which has caused the Club issues with the football authorities and anti-racism campaigners over the years.

Oh that and they had some complaints about the drum and noise itself.

Yes, it seems there are some 'fans' who dont like noise at White Hart Lane.

:harryfacepalm:

Good work mate. Thought it probably had something to do with that to be honest. If that's the case I reckon it'll be a struggle to get them to change their minds. Can't hurt trying though.

The bit about having complaints about noise has actually annoyed me though. I wonder how many people complained about the drum and how many people think its a part of our support.

Countless times people at the back of the stands bang on the metalwork inciting the 'Yids' chant - I am not a season ticket holder so someone may be able to prove me wrong but I get to about 15 games a season at the Lane and have never once seen anyone chucked out or been asked to stop doing that.

Yeah Dru i sit (stand) in that block and stewards leave us be

I'm surprised about that to be honest, I bet they haven't had many complaints though (if any in reality) especially when you think where the drum was positioned, I can't imagine too many people towards the back of Block 31 (or any of that part of the shelf) being bothered by the noise of the drum. Only thing I can think is that it might have been the people in the Executive Boxes along the back of the East Lower.

Thats what I was thinking - pretty sad.

They also said:-

"We are firmly of the belief that White Hart Lane is a unique stadium, with a fantastic atmosphere organically generated by the crowd without the need of additional instrumentation"

That pisses me off aswell, I've seen a few people on twitter saying similar things about how we don't need it and we can generate an atmosphere without it, which is fair enough everyone's entitled to their opinion. But anyone can see that the atmosphere is getting flatter and flatter, so we clearly do need something to help boost the atmosphere, whether that be a drum or something else.

It's not just our club, I fired an email to a load of Premier League clubs today and the responses were all negative.....

My Email

"Do you currently allow musical instruments of any kind inside your stadium on match-day (whistles, rattles, drums, horns etc)?

If so, are they subject to inspection on entry or do fans need prior authorisation to bring them?"

Some select responses....

"Unfortunately no music instruments of any kind are allowed into the Stadium. If a steward or member of security see you using an instrument, it will be confiscated"

"Thank you for your email, we confirm that we do not allow instruments into the stadium in any capacity unless we have prior arranged for a performer before or during half time on the pitch. Authorisation cannot be granted and will be confiscated if found, if anyone during the game uses any instrument then they will be escorted off the premises. We have to take into account the health and safety of everyone within the stadium."

"We do not allow any Musical Instruments inside the Stadium on a Match Day. We have tried different themed Matchdays which have involved allowing certain items in that you mention, over the last few years, but have taken the decision to maintain the ban. Thank you for your interest in the Club."

"Afternoon Ricky sorry but none of these items are allowed in to the ground due to health & safety reasons"

"I’m afraid that musical instruments are not permitted inside the stadium."

"I’m sorry but I’ve been informed from the Safety Manager that musical instruments are not permitted within the ground."

We cover this at length on the pod this week. The drum coming back... not Drummington...

We should definitely talk about Drummington.

I'm surprised that a number of those response cite health and safety. What are the safety concerns? That the drum hammer will fly out of someone's hand and whack a small child on the head?

Reminds me of the time I went to a job centre to meet a mate who worked as it's manager for lunch and was told by the security guard that I could not enter with my coffee flask if it had coffee in it because it was an "offensive weapon".

No common sense these days.

I seem to remember that when we got the drum taken off of us at the Valley, the stewards said something about there being a risk of damage to people's ear drums. I may be wrong though because that does sound pretty mad and I was quite drunk.

I remember that too, don't think you're imagining things!

I do remember when I was younger sitting a few rows in front of the drummer and I had ringing in my ears for about 3 days. But still, no excuse to ban it :parker:

Think a lot of the bans came in on musical instruments after the godawful vuvuzelas in the World Cup South Africa.

I'm going to be honest - I'm not all that bothered if there's a drum or not, I go to the Lane to see good football and take in the atmosphere and a drum won't change that.

The atmosphere against Norwich was bad because we could not seem to hold the ball and we could not get going on or off the pitch, I don't think a drum would have changed things all that much.

Actually on atmosphere heard some stupid comments Monday, just 1 example being about 2 minutes before Defoe scored and missed the cross, 'f**king West Ham reject, we should send him back there', with fans like that who needs enemies?? Added to that I sat in the Park Lane against Swansea and one guy was having a one man battle with the stewards about standing up and did not watch more than about 10 minutes of the game..

Am I the only one who doesn't get some of our fans??

It is not over until the fat lady sings or in our case, the second choice Ajax goalkeeper, so I think we have two options to name a few, 1) buy the stadium, 2) Do a video to oppose the 'Y'-word, which was made by some Chelsea supporter who makes it racist and offensive to use the term Yid,

Well, I come from a Jewish family and I maintain that I was raised to treat it as an offensive term. However, so many fans don't see it that way, including some Jewish fans, I don't see it changing anytime soon - especially as I don't think most who say it are even aware of it's connotation or are in any way setting out to offend.

Nonetheless, I can't really disagree with the message of the video. If that puts me in a minority, so be it.
